Jerolyn Nadine Phillips, 81, of Milton-Freewater, died at the Milton-Freewa- ter Health and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her husband and family. She was born to Jona and Mildred (McVey) Ross in Stockham, Ne. Two years later, her brother, Gary, was born. During WWII, the family moved to San Fran- cisco where Jona served in the military. Jerolyn shared Phillips many fond memories of this time in her life. The birth of a second daughter, Linda, completed their family. They finally settled in Aurora, Neb. Jerolyn met Richard Oswald in Aurora. They were married Nov. 11, 1953, and moved to Rich’s family farm. Two daughters, Peggy Lynn and Laurel Kay, and a son, Robert Alan, came along during the first three years of their marriage. Ten years later, the family moved to Utah, first to Kays- ville for a year, then to Bountiful. Jerolyn loved the beauty of the mountains in Utah, and hiking in them was a favor- ite pastime. Richard and Jerolyn took many trips to the Southwest United States where they collected Native American jew- elry, Kachina dolls, sand paintings and rugs. Tragedy struck the family when Peggy died in 1978, followed by Richard in 1991. Jerolyn began taking piano lessons at an early age, and her talent quickly became apparent to the family and all who listened to her. She won many awards at various contests. She also took clarinet lessons, holding the position of first chair in the school bands. Jerolyn shared her love of music with others by teaching piano lessons most of her adult life as well as playing the piano and organ for the churches and clubs she belonged to. Jerolyn moved to Milton-Freewater to be close to her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren a year after the death of Richard. She resumed playing the piano and organ for church, as well as accompanying the choir at Christ the King Lutheran Church where she remained a member until her death. Jerolyn met Woodbury (Bud) Phillips shortly after mov- ing to Milton-Freewater. They were married at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Sept. 4, 1999, and immediately moved to Wallowa. She was a member of Integrity Rebekah Lodge 175 in Milton-Freewater and Rebekah Lodge in Wallowa. After three years, they moved back to Milton-Freewater. As Jerolyn grew ill from memory loss, Bud took wonder- ful care of her. Adrianne Gardner also became a caregiver to Jerolyn, both at home and later when she was moved to the health center. Jerolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Oswald; daughter, Peggy Lynn Neal; son-in-law, Terry E. Hackney; grandson, Steven Hackney; her parents, Jona and Mildred Ross; and her brother-in-law, Gary Happy. She is survived by her husband, Bud Phillips; brother, Gary Ross; and sister, Linda Ross-Happy; daughter, Lau- rel Hackney; son, Robert Oswald; grandchildren, Andrea (Oswald) Walter, Tyler Oswald, Christopher Oswald, Phil- lip Hackney and Alan Hackney; and five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Milton-Freewater. Her body will be interred at the Bountiful Cemetery in Bountiful, Utah, next to her hus- band, Richard, and daughter, Peggy, in view of the Wasatch Mountains. Memorial contributions may be made to Feed the Chil- dren, 333 N. Meridian, Oklahoma City, OK 73107 or Christ the King Lutheran Church through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home. C ORRECTION A story published in the March 14 edition incorrectly stated that Maxville north of the City of Wallowa was once the largest town in Wallowa County. A comparison of census data from the ‘20s and ‘30s reveals that at 400 residents, Maxville was roughly half the size of Joseph and Wallowa and roughly a third the size of Enterprise. The Chieftain regrets the error. Now in Paperback The Shadow Land By Elizabeth Kostova T HE B OOKLOFT Across from the courthouse in Enterprise 107 E.
