A14 WEDNESDAY March 21, 2018 OUTLAW TRACKSTERS DEBUT THURSDAY Paul Wahl/Chieftain Outlaw runners freshmen Brendan Moore, left, and Kyla Hook are joined by sophomore Cole Gomes for some road work last week. By Paul Wahl Wallow County Chieftain F unky spring weather has not dampened the enthu- siasm for the Enterprise boys and girls varsity track and field squad, which debuts its season Thursday. Coach Dan Moody has 56 stu- dents in tow, up some from last year. Moody expects the girls squad to be much stronger than last year and the boys “somewhat” ahead of last year’s team in the early going. “We have a number of first-year kids for the boys we are expecting a lot from,” Moody said. “They have a lot of talent.” He also has a good crop of returning athletes to provide depth for the team. Freshmen Brendan Moore, a distance runner, and Jericho Peters, a sprinter, will be team leaders, Moody said. DeeDee Duncan, left, Eliza Irish and Ashley Wilson put in miles of practice for the Enterprise High School track team last week. Sophomores Cole Gomes, a distance runner, and Foster Hobbs, a relay runner, will shine. Hobbs placed fifth in state last year in the 200M. Timmy Wells will be in the thick of things in sprints and jumps, Moody said. SPORTS CALENDAR SOFTBALL Friday, March 23 –– 11 a.m. Lost River in the Rocket Invitation at Pilot Rock Elementary. Junior jumpers Joe Robb and Dylan Marr have a bright future this year. Jake Coggins, Colton Rickert, Justus Evan and Shane Lund are newcomers but strong athletes from performances in other sports. Trent Walker and Cole Farwell are first-year seniors with prom- ise. Seniors Ethan Burns placed fourth in state last year in javelin and is expected to be a strong con- tender this year. Moody also men- tioned Blaze Lepper as a potential standout. Freshman Kyla Hook has the potential to be one of the team’s top distance runners, Moody said. Experience comes from sopho- mores DeeDee Duncan, who com- peted in state in the 1500M last year and hurdler Ashlyn Gray. Page Lattin is new this year and expected to perform well. Juniors veterans Karli Bedard, Hero Peters and Ashley Wilson all have state medals from last year. Seniors Eliza Irish and Riley Gray are both experienced veterans. Moody said the goal in the early going is to improve from week to week “so we get to where we want to be by the end of the season.” Traditionally, Enterprise scores most of its team points from runners. “Overall this year, we’re going to be pretty spread out evenly, especially for the girls,” Moody said. The Outlaw’s friendly rivalry with Union will provide a spark for the team, as well as facing ever-tough Grant Union. “They’re the only team that’s near the size we are,” Moody said. “Most of the rest of the teams are half our size.” Rusty Eschler is Moody’s assistant coach. “Our goal is to get as many kids as we can to state and place at state,” said Moody, who has been a track and field coach for more than 40 years. He began his tenure in Enterprise in 1986. “I hope I’m not an old fud- dy-duddy,” Moody said with a laugh.
