A6 News wallowa.com December 20, 2017 Wallowa County Chieftain Minam River Lodge adds CEO Patricia Lee has been named CEO of the Minam River Lodge, as the revamped wil- derness lodge readies for its second season. Lee is the former manager and partner of the Steamboat Inn on the North Umpqua River, where she worked for more than 30 years. She will now oversee strategic and business operations of the Minam River Lodge, which is located in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. “Pat has a wonderful history of accom- plishment, not just in hospitality manage- ment but also in creating very special places that help people experience Oregon’s natu- ral treasures,” said Barnes Ellis, owner of Minam River Lodge. The lodge reopened in May 2017 after a six-year restoration project. It is accessible only by 8.5-mile hike, horseback ride or charter flight to its private grass airstrip. Submitted photo Combined festival planned in 2018 Building on the success of a merged celebration in 2017, the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center and Wal- lowa Resources will once again combine the Maxville Gathering and the Water- shed Festival at the Wallowa County Fairgrounds on June 29, 2018. The two events are natural complements. Wallowa Resources’ Watershed Festival has been a community celebration of natural and cultural resources for 14 years. It’s a chance for the community to con- nect with local organizations and learn about their steward- ship work in a fun way, and celebrate the county’s moun- tains, canyons, forests, rivers, lakes, animals, grasslands and people. The Maxville Gathering –– now in its 10th year –– cel- ebrates the rich and diverse cultural history of logging in Wallowa County and similar isolated communities across the Pacific Northwest. Together they honor the connection of people to place and each other and to recog- nize the skill, passion and sweat required to make a liv- ing from the land. This celebration is family friendly and fun for all ages with logging demonstrations, scavenger hunts, fishing, stories, lumberjack games, a silent auction, drawings and award-winning music by the Darrell Brann fam- ily of Enterprise and other musicians. Local foods are available plus free hot dogs are served for children 15 and younger. T HE B OOKLOFT It’s great to watch a busi- ness develop. We’ve been watching Rose and Brandon Casper’s “Trou- ble Tree Service” shop go up at 606 Wynema Street and High- way 84 in Wallowa for the last three years and it’s nearly complete. Of course Brandon has been working all that time, tak- ing down troublesome trees throughout the county. He likes hazardous tree removal espe- cially and collaborates with Eric Sinclair of Sinclair Broth- ers Tree Service of Enterprise often. “I like working with Bran- don,” Sinclair said. “He’s a good guy and does a good job. He takes pride in his work, no matter what kind of work it is.” A third generation Wallowa Countian, Brandon, is the son of Don and Kathy Casper of Wallowa. His wife, Rose, is a Montana girl who moved to Wallowa County for a job at Sterling Bank (now Umpqua Bank, in Enterprise). She was embarking on a career, but then she met a good looking, serious young bank customer named Brandon Casper and decided BIZ BUZZ Kathleen Ellyn to fulfill another goal and make a lateral move career-wise — using her banking experience in a more specific field. Brandon has a Construc- tion Contractors Board (CCB) license with a tree service spe- cialty, but he’s now branch- ing out more into construction work. He’s worked on con- struction projects with Enter- prise-based homebuilder Don- nie Rynearson, and local electricians Kenny and Ernie Knifong of Knifong Electric. The plan is to do tree ser- vice in the spring and fall and general construction year round, said Rose. Right now Brandon and his right hand man, Max Tovar of Joseph, are working on a patio and covered porch at Linda and Steve Testerman’s rental on Golf Course Road in Enterprise. “They’ve done a great job,” said Steve Testerman. “It’s a AND Wallowa United Methodist Church Finding books is our specialty 102 West 1st Street, P.O. Rose, who has been busy lately with little Jacob Casper, 2, and Isabelle, 9 months, plans to keep office hours sometime in the future. In the meantime, you can call or text Brandon for a construction job or tree work at 541-398-8212. In other tree related news, I just want to remind people that Butch Tanzey owner of Tanzey Forest Improvement has a lot full of wood out behind Back- Achers off the Truck Route Road in Wallowa that he’s har- vested off the wood lots he manages. It’s mostly Douglas fir and other pulp logs and he has about 250 cords left to cut, he said. The “come and get it” price is $180 per cord and delivery around Wallowa goes for $200 a cord.
