Wallowa County Chieftain News wallowa.com Courtesy photo Ted Daggett had a wonderful pumpkin patch in Joseph this year, his fifth as a grower. His largest pumpkin weighed 43 pounds. Ted was born and raised in Joseph and will be 80 next month. He has lived in the same place since 1976. Ted and Virginia thought it would be interesting and fun to see if pumpkins would grow on their land. Crops have been bounteous. Ted was the Wallowa County weed officer from 1978-97. IN BRIEF The Chief Joseph Days Rodeo has been awarded top mid-size rodeo of the year by the Columbia River Circuit, which sanctions roughly 32 rodeos annually. Elgin Stampede was named the top small rodeo and the Horse Haven Roundup in Ken- newick, Wash., captured the top award for large rodeos. The award will be pre- sented at meeting of the circuit leadership Saturday, No. 4, in Yakima, Wash. This is the fi rst year the group has recognized a mid- size rodeo, defi ned as having added money between $5,001 and $10,000. Added money is revenue donated to the rodeo committee by the sponsors to attract contestants to the rodeo for competition. Josephy hosts Tamastlikst visit The Josephy Center and Wallowa Nez Perce Homeland will host a fi eld trip to Tamast- likst, the fi ne Cultural Institute on the Umatilla Reservation near Pendleton. Tamastlikst is located at the same offramp as Wildhorse Resort. As announced in last week’s Chieftain, the group received an $80,000 grant from Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights program to create a new con- cert of original songs and video inspired by the stories of the multicultural populations of Maxville and Vanport. Additional aspects include readings by Fishtrap, work- shops and a performance that coincides with the Vanport Mosaic Festival, May 26-27, 2018 in Portland. The multi-aspect concert tour includes community dis- cussion events in Portland and Joseph this fall and a per- formance tour to La Grande, Enterprise and Baker City in April 2018, culminating with the performance at the Van- port Mosaic Festival. Vanport was the nation’s largest wartime housing developments, a site for social innovation, a lightning rod for racial prejudice and the scene of one of Oregon’s major disasters. Those with personal ties to descendants of loggers of all ethnicities who worked at Maxville are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone with a particular interest in Oregon history or jazz.
