Wallowa County Chieftain Announcements wallowa.com September 20, 2017 A3 O BITUARY Patricia Ann (Burleigh Micka Dec. 11, 1943 –– Aug. 31, 2017 Patricia Ann (Burleigh) Micka passed away Thurs- day, Aug. 31, 2017, at Wal- lowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. She was a car- ing and loving individual who will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Pat was born Dec. 11, 1943, in Klamath Falls, Ore., to Robert and Marjorie Burleigh. The family resided on a 320-acre ranch between Klamath Falls and Merrill, Ore. She grew up almost like an only child as her older brother, Bobby, was 12 years older than she. Pat was an active child as she partici- pated in ballet, tap dancing, acrobats and swimming. Her favorite was ballet. Pat graduated from Mer- rill High School in 1962. In school she was actively involved in many clubs and organizations: annual staff, paper staff, music, state speech, speech dub, pep club, 4-H, Theta Rho and the Elks Panel. Her senior year she was voted, “Most Likely to Succeed.” Her hobbies included going swimming, dancing, reading, listening to music and spending time with friends. She continued to enjoy these hobbies through- out her years. Modern telephone system coming to Enterprise OUT OF THE PAST Compiled by Paul Wahl 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 20, 1917 The post offi ce in Enter- prise has been ordered top move as soon as possible to the south room in S.L. Burnaugh’s stone building just north of the Enterprise Hotel. The room has not been occupied since the structure was fi nished last fall. The new space is twice the size of the old, according to postmater Ben Weathers. A modern common-bat- tery telephone system equal to those of La Grande, Pend- leton and Baker will be installed very soon in Enter- prise. Home Independent Telephone Co. has placed an order with the Kellog Switch- board and Supply Co. of Chi- cago for more than $6,000 in equipment. The special revival meet- ings conducted for some weeks by the Nazarene church in the tent east of the courthouse have come to an end. N. B. Herrell, district superintendent of the denom- ination, returned to his home in Boise. 70 YEARS AGO Sept. 12, 1947 Mr. and Mrs. William Klages of the Lower Prairie Creek district celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary Aug. 31 at a picnic at Wallowa Lake. All three of the couple’s children -- K.H., Maria and Henry -- were on hand. Earl Morgan has sold his interest in the Eagle Cap laun- dry to Bill Warnock of Joseph, who will be associated with his brother-in-la Mervin Zoll- man in operating the business. Mr. Morgan is again employed at Safeway where he worked prior to acquiring an interest in the laundry. A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shevlin of Joseph Sunday when about 20 neighbors and friends came in with their musical instruments for an evening of music and singing. Valley Appliance of Enter- prise has announced it will be opening a photographic sup- plies department selling cam- eras, projectors, fi lm and dark- room supplies. 50 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1967 Members of the Eagle Cap VFW Auxiliary have stepped up to supply English language school textbooks for Capt. William F. Beck for chil- dren in Vietnam where he is stationed. The books were recently mailed from the Enterprise Post offi ce –– 17 boxes worth, several hundred books totaling more than 500 pounds. Charles Ward, formerly of Crescent City, Calif., and Lostine, has joined the Enter- prise Police Department as night patrolman replacing Dan Marks who left to pursue other interests. The Wallowa County Cho- rus has planned two concerts for the upcoming season –– one at Christmas and the sec- ond in the spring. The fi rst practice is Oct. 16 at Joseph High School. 25 YEARS AGO Sept. 17, 1992 The U.S. Forest Service announced it has purchased the last parcel of privately held property on the Ore- gon side of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The agency has purchased 490 acres of ranchland in the northeast corner of the county from Don “Biden” Tippett for $450,000. Kyle Kolbaba of Joseph was seriously injured while competing in the bullrid- ing event at the Lewiston Roundup Sept. 10. He suffered several broken ribs and a badly bruised lung. Kolbaba and his wife, the former Sandi Turner, became parents of their fi rst child, Kolton, last Wednesday in Walla Walla. Enterprise Mayor Larry Christman received a plaque with gavel as a token of appre- ciation from city employees for 14 years of service to the city. Christman is not running for re-election. She had planned on pursuing a career as an ele- mentary education teacher. A year prior to attending college, she met Jerry Eugene Micka on a blind date. The couple married June 24, 1963, at the First Presbyterian Church in Weiser, Idaho. They purchased their fi rst farm together in Malin, Ore., which had been the original farm of Joseph Micka (Jerry’s grandfather). The family later moved to Enterprise to raise their children. Pat worked at the Pioneer Guest Home for 13 years as the administrator and pro- vided for her family. She and Jerry later moved to Kamiah, Idaho. There, she owned and operated The Country Patch Gift and Health Food Store for more than 15 years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafts, cooking and oil painting. Her true joy was spending time with her fam- ily, which she cherished as she was a very loving wife and mother. Pat will be remembered by her loved ones for her love of animals (her Siamese cats), laughter, hugs, beaming smile and kindness toward others.
