ulcimer Week in the Wallowas will
present its Seventh-Annual Dulci-
mer Extravaganza 7:30 pm Friday,
July 7, at The Place, 303 S. Lake Street
in Joseph (next to the Methodist Church).
The concert features Dulcimer Week’s
mountain dulcimer instructors.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for
children 12 and under. Pay at the door.
This year’s headliner is Stephen Seif-
ert from Nashville, returning for his third
time to teach at Dulcimer Week. He will
be joined by Rob Brereton from Sher-
man, Conn.; Aaron O’Rourke from Chat-
tanooga, Tenn.; and Bob Webb and Heidi
Muller from Joseph. Organizers say the
concert is a toe-tapping, family-friendly
good time that typically treats the audience
to amazing music not usually played on a
dulcimer.
Seifert is widely considered to be one
of America’s fi nest dulcimer players.
He has been a soloist with the Nashville
Chamber Orchestra (now Orchestra Nash-
ville), since 1996 and performs on their
Warner Classical recording of “Blackberry
Winter.”
Brereton is a pioneer in contemporary
mountain dulcimer playing. A classical
guitarist with a degree in music theory and
composition, he specializes in the stan-
dards and early jazz tunes of Duke Elling-
ton, George Gershwin and the like.
O’Rourke discovered the mountain dul-
cimer as a bass player in a punk rock band.
Eight years later, he won the National
Mountain Dulcimer Championship.
Webb is a multi-instrumentalist who
played for nine years in the house band of
the radio show “Mountain Stage.” In his
50 years of playing dulcimer, he has taught
dulcimer to hundreds of children and adults
in schools, community centers and festi-
vals from West Virginia to the Northwest.
He and Heidi Muller are familiar faces on
the local music scene. They are the hosts
and organizers of Dulcimer Week.

This week’s athlete of the
week is Barrie Qualle, one of
the members of the Quail Run
Ranch team that beat out all
comers to win the coveted team
championship at the Chief Joseph
Days Ranch Rodeo on July 1.
We teach Christian values and respect for all religious beliefs.
Experienced teachers provide individualized
instruction in a safe learning environment.
Students advance an average of 1.7 grade
levels per year in attendance.
It was the third straight
championship for Qualle’s team,
but it’s something he never takes
for granted:
“The competition is getting
better. We only won by four
points and third place wasn’t
all that far back. We faced some
tough teams.”
