Wallowa School grads earn scholarships
Wallowa High School
graduates were offered more
than $280,000 in scholarships
and fi nancial assistance this
year, with local scholarship
organizations
contributing
generously. The senior class
numbered 15 students.
• Valedictorian Jordan
Ferre´ plans to attend Stan-
ford University in Palo Alto,
Calif., and major in biologi-
cal sciences. He received the
DeWUHS-Keckritz Educa-
tional Trust Award, the Mike
Holloran and Elizabeth Jack-
son Holloran King Memorial
Scholarship, the Ceecil and
Lottie Chrisman Memorial
Scholarship, the Old Oregon
League Scholarship and the
Wallowa High School Student
Body Government Scholar-
ship.
• Salutatorian Ashley
Starner-Durning will attend
Blue Mountain Community
College in Pendleton and ma-
jor in elementary education.
She received the Ford Family
Foundation Scholarship, the
Oregon Promise Award, the
Wallowa FFA Alumni Schol-
arship, the Soroptimist Schol-
arship, the DeWUHS-Keck-
ritz Educational Trust Award,
the Chief Joseph Days Schol-
arship, the Betty Conrad Me-
morial Scholarship, the Terry
Crenshaw Memorial Schol-
arship, the Ceecil and Lottie
Chrisman Memorial Scholar-
ship and the Wallowa County
Teachers Guild Scholarship.
• Gabe Burns will attend
Treasure Valley Community
College in Ontario to study
Wildland Management. He
received an Oregon Promise
Award.
• Sierra Cabral will attend
Yavapai College in Prescott,
Ariz., to study sociology and
creative writing. She received
the Wallowa Education Asso-
ciation Scholarship, the Wal-
lowa Honor Society schol-
arship, the Ceecil and Lottie
Chrisman Memorial Schol-
arship, the Wallowa County
Teachers Guild Scholarship,
the Wallowa Education As-
sociation Scholarship and the
Tamkaliks Scholarship.
• Travis Haga will attend
Central Community College
in Bend.
• Chandler Burns will at-
tend Walla Walla Community
College to become a barber.
He received the Walla Walla
Community College Foun-
dation Award, the Ceecil and
Lottie Chrisman Memorial
Scholarship and the Jack Cole-
man Memorial Scholarship.
• Elizabeth Johnston will
attend Oregon Coast commu-
nity College in Newport to
study early childhood educa-
tion. She received an Oregon
Promise Award.
• Austin Lindros will at-
tend the University of Idaho in
Moscow to pursue a Wildlife
Science degree.
• Bryce Melville will at-
tend Blue Mountain Commu-
nity College in Pendleton and
study Criminal Justice. He
received an Oregon Promise
Award, the E.J. and Blockland
Memorial Scholarship, the
Wallowa County 4-H Associ-
ation Scholarship and the Jack
Coleman Scholarship.
• Alejandro Mendez will
attend Blue Mountain Com-
munity College in Pendleton
and major in computer sci-
ence. He received an Oregon
Promise Award, the Terry
Crenshaw Memorial Schol-
arship and the Lawton and
Florence McDaniel Memorial
Scholarship.
• Casen Douglass plans to
join the Job Corps and become
an electrician. He received an
Oregon Promise Award.
• Stacy Douglass plans
to attend Oregon State Uni-
versity and pursue large an-
imal veterinary studies. She
received an Oregon Promise
Award, the Rotary Club of
Wallowa County Scholar-
ship, the OSUE Merit Award,
the Jacob Rinker Memorial
Scholarship, the Ceecil and
Lottie Chrisman Memorial
Scholarship, The Wallowa
High School Rotary Interact
Scholarship and the E.J. and
Blockland Memorial Schol-
arship.
• Alexsandria Markle will
attend Blue Mountain Com-
munity College in Pendleton
to major in Nursing. She re-
ceived an Oregon Promise
Award.
• Breanna Phelps is un-
decided which college she
will attend. In the meantime,
she will enter the workforce
working with children. She
was awarded the Oregon
Promise Award, the Wallowa
High School Natural Helpers
Award, the Margaret Dough-
erty Memorial Scholarship,
the Lawton and Florence
McDaniel Memorial Scholar-
ship and the Wallowa County
Teachers Guild Scholarship.
• Caitlin Robb will attend
Treasure Valley Community
College in Ontario and ma-
jor in Veterinarian Techni-
cian Sciences. She received
the Oregon Promise Award,
the Chief Joseph Days Prin-
cess Scholarship and the Kate
Johnson Goebel Memorial
Scholarship.

Actual work on the new
$60,000 School house for En-
terprise has begun. E.A. Freed-
en is here from Portland as su-
perintendent of construction
for John Almeter, contractor,
and is engaged in the prelimi-
naries. These have consisted to
date in laying out the grounds,
determining elevations, etc.
Five weddings in the fi rst
week prove truth of the old
saying ... Although June is not
a week old, the month has jus-
tifi ed its name as the month of
weddings. Five having been
performed in Enterprise al-
ready. With such a good start,
Cupid should make a record
showing before the 30 days of
June pass. The weddings are
as follows: McIntyre-Mullen,
Hayes-Jensen, Neal-Emmons,
Baker-Loftus and Vest-Emer-
son.

June 12, 1947
Election of offi cers was
featured business of the Wal-
lowa Junior Chamber of Com-
merce in the organization’s
third bi-monthy meeting held
in Lostine on Friday evening,
June 6. Warner Crow was
chosen to serve as the fi rst
president. Malcolm Dawson
of Joseph and Ermil Sater,
Wallowa, were elected to fi rst
and second vice-presidencies,
respectively.
The Wallowa County Farm
Bureau has awarded two year-
ly scholarships to 4-H club
summer school. The beef
club scholarship, which is to
be given annually in honor of
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Dorrance
and known as the “Dorrance,
Scholarship,” was awarded
by a Farm Bureau commit-
tee to Joan Crow of Lostine,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.
W. Crow.
A family reunion of the
Zollman families was held
at the lake on Wednesday in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Beard and Mr. and Mrs. David
Beard of Jericho Springs, Mo.
They had been visiting at the
home of their son and brother,
Denzil Beard, and family at
Milton and all came over for
the reunion.
4-H club member writes
prize play ... Miss Aleta
Breshears of Wallowa won
third place in the 1947 state
4-H club radio play-writing
contest, it was announced by
OSC at Corvallis. A $40 cash
award will be divided among
the eight winners, and seven of
Chosen as Duke and Duch-
ess of the 4-H play day, which
was held last Saturday, were
two young riders Linda Lath-
rop and Steve Zollman. They
were among nearly 100 riders
competing for the honors.
Susan Benson, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Haven T. Benson
of Wallowa Lake, was chosen
as queen of the 1967 Chief
Joseph Days Rodeo. The an-
nouncement of the queen se-
lection was made at the dance,
which was held in Joseph last
Saturday night. Queen Susan
was crowned by out-going
queen, Karen Quinn, at the in-
termission of the dance.
From all early indications,
a big crowd is expected for
Wallowa County’s fi rst annu-
al amateur rodeo scheduled
for the fairgrounds July 8-9.
Rodeo festivities will get un-
der way Friday night, July 7,
with an old-fashioned Western
dance at Cloverleaf Hall.

June 4, 1992
Harry Petersen of Joseph
led the fi eld of local competi-
tors with a fi rst place fi nish in
the second heat of the street
stock class of the Wallowa
Valley Racing Association af-
ter posting a second place fi n-
ish in the fi rst heat. Other local
winners include Ron Bender
of Enterprise who was second
and third, respectively, in the
street stock event, and Tom
Roath, of Enterprise, who was
second on one street stock heat
and third in the street stock
main event.
Wallowa Lake artist Leo
E. Osborne received not only
fi rst place in sculpted mam-
mals category at the Masters
Carving Competition recently
held at Racine, Wis., but also
the Best of Show award for his
sculpture “Yellow Wolf Moon
Dream.” The piece depicts a
sleeping wolf sculpted in a
birdseye maple burl.
The Jack and Harriet Finch
Imnaha Memorial Scholarship
committee met recently and
has awarded the scholarship
for 1992 to Jill Stilson, daugh-
ter of Jim and Judy Stilson of
Joseph. The Cow Chip Lot-
tery was won by Madeliene
Bell who donated $50 back
to the scholarship fund. The
pine needle handcrafted basket
made by Arlene Lovell was
won by Janet Fields and the
bells by Jean Stubblefi eld.
