O BITUARIES
Billie Michels
May 5, 1931 - March 14, 2017
Larry Jones
April 2, 1935 – March 19, 2017
Billie Michels of Montesa-
no, Washington, passed away
March 14, 2017 at the age of
85 years. Billie was born May
5, 1931, in Baker, Oregon.
She enjoyed many years
bowling and golfi ng all over
the country. She was a wom-
an who loved the outdoors —
hunting, fi shing, camping or
boating. She was also an ac-
tive sorority sister of Beta Sig-
ma Pi. Her family and friends
could always catch her with
her nose in a book or a cross-
word puzzle.
Billie is lovingly remem-
bered by her children Mark (Paula) Michels, Cathie (Paul)
Graham; brother, Bob McMurray; sisters Gayle McMurray,
Pat (Chuck) Rieken; eight grandchildren and 13 great grand-
children.
Billie is preceded in death by Homer Michels, son H.
Duane Michels and sister Kaye Brown.
As a 40-year breast cancer survivor, the family suggests
donations to the Susan G. Komen Organization in lieu of
fl owers; to help fi nd a cure in honor of Billie.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Enterprise, Oregon,
later this summer.
Larry Elvin Jones passed away peacefully on March 19,
2017, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.
Larry was born on April 2 , 1935, in Cambridge, Idaho, to
John and Joyce (Pratt) Jones. He joined older siblings Dean
and Fauna. When Larry was 2 years old, the family moved to
the Alder Slope area of Enterprise, Oregon, where they lived
for a few years before settling permanently in Lostine, Ore-
gon, up the South Fork of the Lostine River. Larry attended
the Lostine Public School and was one of seven students in
his 1953 graduating class. That same year, he married his high
school sweetheart, Muriel Lathrop Jones, who had graduated
two years earlier.
After graduation, Larry went to work at the Bates Mill
in Wallowa, followed by a stint with Moffi t Brothers Trans-
portation in Lostine. Around 1965, Larry went into business
for himself, starting Jones Excavating. Larry was an expert
equipment operator and could usually be found in the seat of
his favorite Case backhoe. He hired locals Bob Peterson and
Buzz Kruckman to drive dump truck alongside him in the ear-
ly years.
Larry and Muriel welcomed two sons, Terry in 1953 and
Kirk in 1959. Both boys followed Larry into the family busi-
ness.
The family made their home only a pasture away from his
childhood home.
Larry had many hobbies. As a young man, he helped Mike
Moffi t pack visitors into North Minam Meadows, spending
many summers in the mountains. He was a member of the Elks
Lodge, enjoyed trap shooting competitions, and was a mem-
ber of a local bowling team for many years. He loved hunting
and fi shing and greatly enjoyed trips to Alaska with his friends
Bruce Strathearn and Steve Bilben. As he moved toward re-
tirement, Larry dabbled in cooking, especially smoking the
meat from the game that his family harvested. His smoked
jerky and sausages were much coveted by friends and family.
In later years, he looked forward to attending his grand-
children’s sporting events, especially grandson Travis’ state
championship football and basketball games. He was also re-
sponsible for buying his granddaughter, Teah, her fi rst pony
and followed her riding exploits clear through her year as Miss
Rodeo Oregon. He loved his grandchildren and during the last
few years, he especially looked forward to visits from his
great-grandchildren, Trace, Tegan, TyLee, Cyrus and Morgan.
Larry is survived by his wife of 63 years, Muriel; his sister,
Fauna; his son, Terry and wife Trena; grandchildren Teah and
Travis (Samantha); fi ve great-grandchildren with one more on
the way. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his broth-
er, Dean; and his son, Kirk.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 1, at 11
a.m. at the Lostine Presbyterian Church with vault interment
to follow at the Lostine Cemetery. A dinner will be held af-
terwards at the Lostine Tavern. Dinner will be prepared by
Applefl att catering.
Memorial contributions in Larry’s name may be made to
the Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation, P.O. Box 53, En-
terprise, Oregon 97828, or to a charity of choice.

of people or pets. Be sure to set your camera for “cloudy” or use Photoshop or other
