JoAnne R. Cornett

JoAnne R. Cor-
nett, age 73, of Joseph;
passed away suddenly
in her home on Thurs-
day, January 19th,
2017.
She was born March
30, 1943 in Kirkland,
Washington, to the late
Bill and Dorothy Chit-
wood; who, a few years
later moved their fami-
ly, with JoAnne and son
Harold, to Joseph. In
1961, JoAnne graduat-
ed high school and shortly thereafter married Gayle
Harshfi eld. Soon their son Michael Harshfi eld was
born, but sadly Gayle passed away when Michael
was only 2. JoAnne later married Jerry Cornett in
1966, and together they had her daughter Sherri.
Jerry and JoAnne divorced in 1979, but always re-
mained friends.
JoAnne worked for 12 years for the Joseph
School District in the cafeteria; where she tireless-
ly made homemade rolls, served warm food, and
bright smiles daily. Laughter could often be heard
in the halls as her and her co-workers always had
a great time together while making nutritious and
hearty meals for the students and faculty. She also
appreciated the “free” summers from school where
she found new opportunities as a grain-truck driver,
a fl agger for the state highway department, and an
attendant at Wallowa Lake State Park where she en-
joyed the versatility, people, and just being outdoors.
At age 40, JoAnne took on one of her biggest
challenges when she became a Merchant Marine for
ARCO Co. For nine years she worked on an oil lin-
er, fi rst as a mess person and then was promoted to
cook-baker.
Caring for and preparing meals for an entire crew
of an oil tanker three football fi elds long, through
rough and rolling seas, was a constant challenge;
though one to which she gave her all and all the
while looking her best, no matter how rough the sea.
When she got a shore-to-ship call saying she had a
new grandson, she began thinking about retiring and
being home with her family. However, the friends
and memories she made on the high seas, which took
her from Alaska to the Panama Canal, were always
near and dear to her.
JoAnne’s interests were numerous and her hob-
bies were painting/sketching (she often made her
own Christmas cards), interior design of her cozy
home, and watching sports; particularly the sports
played by her kids, grandkids, and their teammates.
Cheering her loved ones to victory was one of her
greatest joys. She also loved spending time with fam-
ily and friends, where she so closely touched many
lives with her warm smile, quick wit, words of wis-
dom, and contagious laughter.
Her best friends Donna Smith and Sandy War-
nock got together whenever they could for dinners,
discussions, and always their annual Christmas party;
where the three of them would have a delicious meal
and exchange their gifts. They went to great lengths
to get just the right gift and make it a big surprise,
whether it was sheets, boots, a coat, or even a new
wheelbarrow.
JoAnne is survived by her son, Michael Harsh-
fi eld, and his wife Lillian; daughter Sherri Swindle-
hurst and her husband Ryan; grandchildren Ryan, Ty-
ler, and Taylor Harshfi eld; and she also leaves behind
numerous other loving relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William
Virgil and Dorothy Alida Chitwood; her husband,
Gayle Harshfi eld; step-father, Sanford Thorpe; and
her brother, Virgil Harold Chitwood.
Family, friends, and so many others whose lives
have been touched by JoAnne are invited to the new
Enterprise Christian Church located at 85035 Joseph
Highway, Enterprise, OR 97828 on Saturday, Feb.
18, at 1 p.m. Donations can be made in JoAnne’s
name, to the Enterprise Christian Church for those
who desire to do so. JoAnne’s family wishes to ex-
tend a gracious thank you for all the love, support,
cards, fl owers, food, kind words and prayers during
these diffi cult times.
The following quote was found among JoAnne’s
notes: “Life’s not about learning to weather the
storm; but rather learning to dance in the rain.”

Ina Ann Scott Sandlin
March 19, 1934 — Jan. 21, 2017
Ina Ann Scott Sandlin, 82,
went to be with the Lord on
Jan. 21, 2017, surrounded by
loved ones at her home in En-
terprise.
Ina was born March 19,
1934, at her grandmother’s
(Cora Estes Scott) home in
Joseph to Harvey and Nellie
Ann Nuxoll Scott. Ina (Deb)
and Inez (Ducky) were born
that day (twins) and joined an
older sister Joan.
Ina completed primary
school in Joseph and then her
family moved to Stanfi eld,
Vanport and Portland follow-
ing jobs. Ina attended Roos-
evelt High School where she
took art and competed in art
competitions throughout the
city; winning many gold keys.
Ina came back to Joseph and
stayed with her Grandmother
Cora and Uncle and Aunt Inie
Rhinehart; graduating from
Joseph High School in 1952.
She met her husband,
Duane Sandlin, while visit-
ing her aunt and uncle, Loren
Scott, on Imnaha. They were
married and moved to the
Sandlin Ranch (XT Ranch) on
the upper Imnaha River with
Duane’s parentls Rose and
Homa Sandlin.
Ina began her school bus
driving career on Imnaha.
She would drive the up-river
kids to school at Imnaha in
the morning, stay the day vis-
iting friends A.L. and Rowe-
na Duckett, Lloyd and Nao-
mi Doss, Carol Borgerding
and many more. Then when
school was out she would
drive the children home.
In 1973 the ranch was sold
and Ina and Duane moved to
Enterprise.
Ina began driving school
bus for Moffi t Brothers and
Enterprise School District.
Ina drove school bus for about
40 years, spanning at least
two generations of children
and she enjoyed every day of
it.
Ina was an accomplished
gardener, artist, mother and
an exceptional grandmother
and great-grandmother; she
was proud of every one of her
children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren!
Ina is survived by her
husband of 63 years; Duane
Sandlin; her daughters Mary
Sandlin, Cindy Kuchenbeck-
er and husband Lyle, Audrey
Osborn and husband John;
nine grandchildren and six
Robert Lester Palmer, M.D.
June 23, 1938 – January 17, 2017
Robert (Bob) Lester Palmer was born in Council,
Idaho on June 23,1938. He passed away on January
17, 2017. His parents, Jennie Butler Palmer and Lester
Curtis Palmer, wife Linda and son Curtis preceded him
in death.

Bob grew up in Council and attended grade school
and high school there. He loved the mountains and
spent as much time as possible in the surrounding area
hunting, fishing and looking for Indian artifacts. Bob also
enjoyed all sports but especially baseball and any horse
related activity. Team roping became his passion.
After graduation from high school Bob attended
the University of Idaho where he pursued a degree in
chemistry. His goal was to become a physician and he
continued toward that goal at Washington University
School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He graduated with
his M.D. degree in June, 1964 and accomplished his
post-graduate training in St, Louis.
During the second year of medical school Bob met
Linda Jane Addison, a senior nursing student at St.
Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. They were married
September 29,1962. In the spring of 1965 Bob was
drafted. He was given a choice of Southeast Asia
(Vietnam) or the Public Health Service Division of Indian
Health in South Dakota, Naturally, he chose South
Dakota.
Following completion of his military obligation, Bob and
Linda settled in Hamilton, Montana. He began his family
practice there in 1967. Bob and Linda acquired a farm
outside Hamilton and raised registered horned Hereford
cattle and quarter horses for a number of years. In 1976
the family moved to the Wallowa Valley in northeast
Oregon. Bob continued in family practice with Winding
Waters Clinic in Enterprise, Oregon.

High Low Conditions
This week’s athlete of the
week is Joseph Charter School
sophomore Kade Kilgore.
Last week’s game against Pine
Eagle saw Kilgore pouring in six
points toward the Eagles cause.
Despite his youth, the JCS
guard is getting his share of
playing time on the court and
getting kudos from his coach for
outstanding defensive play and
rebounding as well.
Kilgore is an honor roll student
who also competes in football.
He is a member of the FFCLA
club, as well as FFA.

Tuesday, Feb. 21
Bob met Mary C. Porter, a registered nurse, while
working at St. Mary Medical Center. They built their
retirement home near Marsing, Idaho and moved
into that home in January 2004. They were wed in
September 2005. While Bob commuted to Walla Walla
for 2 years after their move, Mary became the architect
and overseer for developing their beautiful yard, home
and barn. Bob and Mary loved gardening and very much
enjoyed preserving the products of their labor. Later in
2014, Bob and Mary sold their Marsing home and moved
to a home in Caldwell with less acreage.
Bob is survived by his wife Mary, 4 children, 2
stepchildren, 4 grandchildren, and 4 stepgrandchildren.
His children are: Jennifer Sue Peterman of Oregon;
Dr. Robert Bruce Palmer and wife Karen of Colorado;
Teresa Aileen Palmer and husband Ken Taber of
Hawaii; Rebecca Elise Palmer, a teacher in Idaho.
Stepdaughters are Dr. Angelia Rene Coletta/Hoff and
husband William of southern CA; Michelle Lynn Bull
of Washington. One sister, Lucille Gordon, lives in
Montana.

Monday, Feb. 20
Linda passed away in September 1987 after a
long battle with cancer. Bob made a career change
to emergency medicine and moved to Walla Walla,
Washington in August 1988. He worked in the
emergency room of St. Mary Medical Center. He
remained in that capacity until his retirement In
December 2005.
Bob loved to cook having acquired that skill by
watching his Mother, a professional chef. After retirement
Bob took up, in earnest, an old passion for drawing,
working primarily in graphite. He produced portraits of
family, friends and pets. He also loved drawing horses,
wild animals and old buildings. Bob was a voracious
reader especially of action novels. He spent many hours
in his “Man Cave”, i.e. the tack room in the barn pursuing
this activity.
