Book recounts years in Idaho wilderness Wallowa County Chieftain Jim and Holly Akenson of Enterprise have penned a new book about their 21 years living in the Frank Church-River of No Re- turn Wilderness. “7003 Days” describes encounters with wild- life and nature: tracking wolves and cougars, using mules for transportation and ranch work and in- troducing university stu- dents to life in the rugged Salmon River Mountains of Central Idaho. Holly Akenson is a wildlife biologist cur- rently serving a four- year term on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission. She attended high school in Baker City before at- tending college at East- ern Oregon University, where she earned degrees in biology and secondary education. She earned her master’s degree at the University of Idaho. Jim Akenson is conser- vation director for the Or- egon Hunters Association. Wildlife biologists by training, the Akensons studied the changes in both the animal and plant lives when wolves returned to Idaho. One of their key findings was the complex- ity in determining whether a wolf or another predator had killed an animal. The public can meet the authors Wednesday, Nov. 30 at EOU. A presentation followed by a reception and book signing is from 5-7 p.m. in Huber Audito- rium in Badgley Hall. The event is free.
