Evelyn was born on June 2, 1924 to William Harold Tobin and Effi e Luella (Springer) Tobin in Pueblo, Colo., the youngest of three children. At age 13 she and her family moved to Newberry Springs, Calif. There she met the love of her life, Charles “Earl” Bea- cham. They were married November 19, 1941 and shared 61 years together before Earl went home to be with our Lord. She was the loving mother of three children: Nancy (Tom) Samples of Wallowa; Pat (Vaughn) Kempf of Billings, Mont.; and Ed (Kathi) Beacham of Sisters. She is a grandmother of fi ve, a great-grandmother of 10, and a great-great-grandmother of eight. Before moving to Oregon, Evelyn was a part of the Tobin fam- ily businesses and an active farmer’s wife. In 1958, when they moved to southern Oregon, she did secretarial work with Harry & David and for a freight line, and later worked as a bank teller. After retirement they traveled in their motorhome working with Mobile Missionary Assistance Program building and remodeling churches and church camps for seven years. Due to Earl’s declining health they settled in Lostine for a short time. In 1996 they moved to Bill- ings, where Earl passed away Dec. 6, 2002. In 2003 Evelyn moved back to Wallowa County, where she enjoyed reconnecting with her Wallowa County friends and ministering to shut-ins. She will be remembered for her love of books, the many slip- pers knitted and for her servant’s heart. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. Family was always very important to her, and her ready smile will always be remembered. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings and granddaughter Melynie Samples. Betty Jane Winters died at her home in Eugene on Oct. 27, 2016 at age 73. The cause of death was con- gestive heart failure. She was born June 3, 1943 in La Grande to Lillie and Elmer Trump. She graduated from Wallowa High School in 1961 and married Gary Winters on July 10 that same year. The newlyweds spent two years in Hinesville, Ga., while Gary was sta- tioned at Fort Stewart. They returned to Oregon in 1963 with daughter Laurie and settled in the Willa- mette Valley, where Gary began a career with the Eugene Water and Electric Board. In 1965, the couple purchased their forever home in south Eugene and soon grew the family to fi ve, with the addition of daughter Andrea in 1966 and son Derek in 1968. Bet- ty’s hobbies included gardening, needlecrafts, reading, puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was passionate about collectibles, with a special interest in Hall- mark Ornaments, and was active with a local club for many years. Betty had an eye for detail and enjoyed working as a bookkeep- er, school cook and lingerie fi tter. She was a breast cancer survivor and bravely dealt with several other health issues over the years. Traveling to northeastern Oregon to spend time with family was especially important to her, and she never let distance weaken the strong bonds she had with her parents and siblings. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children – Lau- rie (Shane) Byerly of Dayton, Ore.; Andrea (Ron) Hartman, and Derek Winters, both of Eugene; grandchildren Brandi (Zac) Hart- man, Shelby Byerly, Travis Byerly and Hannah Hartman; and great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Hunter. In addition, she is sur- vived and cherished by sisters Aleta Neal of Lostine, Barbara Asu- mendi of Nyssa, Ore., and Fredia McDonald of La Grande, along with brother Joseph Glenn (Martha) Breshears of Bessemer, Ala. Betty also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brother Charlie Rae. At her request, no services are planned. Memorials are sug- gested to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary. Michael Glafke McIver, born March 21, 1939, son of Alexan- der Cortland McIver and Kathleen McIver, brother to Robert Cort- land McIver (Scotty), passed away at home Oct. 27, 2016 at age 77. Mike attended school in Taft, Ore., and graduated from Taft High School as part of the class of 1957. He went on to serve our country in the U.S. Air Force. He began in basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, in July 1957; then onto Wichita Falls, Texas, where he attended aircraft electricians school; posted in Dauharon, Saudi Arabia, from January 1958 to February 1959 and served out the last of his military service at Fairchild AFB in Spokane from March 1959 to 1960. In 1960 he married Charlotte LaChappelle, and they had a wonderful life together until her death in 2006. In 2008, Mike married Karen Wich, and they, too, had a wonderful life until his death. Mike and Karen were high school classmates. After 46 years of marriage for both, they were widow and widower attending their 50th class reunion. Old friendships were renewed and they were married barefoot on the beach at Fogerty Creek south of Lincoln City a year later. Mike was a highly respected employee as well as a budding entrepreneur. In 1960 he and Charlotte moved to San Fernan- do, Calif., where he leased a Mobil Service Station. Over the next few years he also ran a station in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and leased his own Mobil Station at Pismo Beach, Calif., plus an Arco station in San Luis Obispo. Also in this time period, he worked at Cine-Craft, processing movie fi lm as well as sports fi lm for the colleges. In 1977 they moved back to Lincoln City, where he leased an Exxon Station in Taft for one year. Mike had a persona of fairness and honesty. He gained not only the respect of his employees and clientele, but of the other service station owners in his city; his reputation preceded him. In 1978, they moved to Wallowa County, where they owned the Sears Catalog Store in Enterprise. They ran that store from January 1979 to 1988. After they sold the store, Mike went to work for the Ford garage from 1988 to 1989. In 1989 he went to work for the city of Enterprise, from which he retired in 2001. Mike had a life of service to others. In 1979 Mike became a member of the Rotary Club, Sheriff’s Posse and was a volunteer fi reman from 1980 to 2000. He held the position of fi re chief from 1998 to 2000. Mike knew everyone, and everyone knew Mike. He was an avid hunter, with duck and grouse hunting being his favorite; but come deer, elk and bear season, Mike replaced his shotgun with one of his many hunting rifl es. Season after season he fi lled his tags. He was considered a gun guru by his many friends; long before the word “guru” was trendy, he was the real deal. Mike also enjoyed the relaxation and solace of fi shing, especially from his pontoon boat on Wallowa Lake and on the Snake River. His other pastimes included motorcycle riding (he used to say he had 13 bikes before Charlotte had a house), snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, dirt bike riding in the California desert, water skiing and horseback riding. He had several motorhomes that he and Karen would travel south in for six months each year, as well as Jeeps, dune buggies and boats. Mike also loved antique cars. He could look at an old car and tell you the exact year it was make and how many were built. From 1998-2009 he helped build the log house at the K Bar Ranch, owned by his good friend Kurt Swinburnson. He is survived by wife Karen; sons Phil Wich (Cindy) and Allan Wich (Mary); granddaughters Chelsea Smith (Jason), Sar- ah Wich, Katie Wich and Zachary Wich; great-granddaughters Novalee and Maleena Smith; brothers-in-law Bruce Kuhlman (Ruth) and Merlin LaChappelle (Elaine); nephew Bob McIver (Sharon); nieces Misty, Kathleen, Colinda and Roneen (McIv- er), Dianne Ribordy, Dottie Herring, Dani Savage, Debbie Croft (Ken); Richard Baker, Michael LaChappelle (Melanie) and Da- vid LaChappelle (Gina); cousin Karl Voiles (Elayne); and count- less friends throughout Oregon, California and Nevada. His mother, father and brother preceded him in death. A celebration of life will be held from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at 305 N. River St. in Enterprise. A graveside service at Taft Pioneer Cemetery in Lincoln City will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, with reception to follow at Looking Glass Inn in Taft.
