This Place series from 6-7:30

with an opportunity to explore
their relationship to the places
they’ve come from and the places
they’re in now and are led by
trained facilitators from the ields
of tribal resource management,
anthropology, conlict resolution,
applied theology, natural resource
management, ethnic studies and

The Oregon Recreational
Trails Advisory Council will meet
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the
Joseph Community Center. The
council invites public comments.
The agenda includes presenta-
tions from local trail advocates
and land managers about trail
projects and initiatives in the area.
Fishtrap Fireside returns for
its fourth season at 7 p.m. at the
Fishtrap House, 400 East Grant
St. in Enterprise. The event kicks
off with three local writers, Eliz-
abeth Enslin, Fred Hauptmann
and David Weaver. An open mic
offering audience members a
chance to share their stories will
follow. Admission is free.
This week’s athlete of the week is
Wallowa County’s prevention coordinator
Jason Wilcox. Through his work with
local entity Building Healthy Families, the
36-year-old personifi es the spirit of ath-
letic camaraderie and community-mind-
edness using his “Basketball is Prevention”
program to provide positive activities for
youth in the community.
A former high school athlete, Wilcox
started the program two years ago in
conjunction with Joseph Charter School,
which allows the use of its gym in the
evening hours 2-3 times a week depend-
ing on the time of year. “We try to make it
fi t the time where if folks weren’t playing
basketball, they might be making other
choices,” Wilcox said. The program even
provides jerseys for its participants,
who can number up to 30 at times.
Wilcox lives in Enterprise.

a special event to mark the com-
missioning for the second small
hydro installation at Vern Spaur’s
Ranch, between Wallowa and
Lostine. This is truly a pioneering
