FFA students earn American Degrees
Wallowa County Chieftain
Anna Rinehart of Joseph and
Calli Miller of Wallowa will be
awarded American Degrees during
the National FFA Convention in
Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 19-22. The
American Degree is awarded to less
than one percent of FFA members,
making it one of the organization’s
highest honors. FFA members must
earn at least $10,000 and produc-
tively invest $7,500 to qualify for
the award. They also must partici-
pate in at least 50 hours of commu-
nity service and complete a mini-
mum of three years of instruction in
agricultural education.
Rinehart is a 2015 graduate of
Joseph Charter School and served
as Joseph Chapter reporter and pres-
ident. She also served as Eastern
Oregon District reporter. Her super-
vised agricultural experiences are in
beef production, swine production,
equine science placement and agri-
cultural education. Rinehart raises
registered Hereford cattle and has
raised market hogs and steers for the
Eastern Oregon Livestock Show.
She is currently a sophomore at
Northwest College in Powell, Wyo.,
majoring in agriculture education.
She competes on the Northwest
College livestock judging team, and
spent the summer working for the
OSU Extension Service in Enter-
prise.
“Earning the American Degree
has been a goal of mine since I start-
ed FFA in the eighth grade,” Rine-
hart said. “As a future ag educator
and FFA advisor, I think it is espe-
cially important to demonstrate how
goals can be reached through hard
work and perseverance. I would like
to thank my FFA advisors Dave Yost
and Toby Koehn for their guidance

and encouragement.”
Miller is a 2015 graduate of
Wallowa High School and served
as Wallowa Chapter sentinel and
parliamentarian. Her agricultural
experiences were in sheep produc-
tion, beef production and poultry
production. Miller raised Barbado/
Dorper/Katahdin sheep and Scottish
Highlander cattle. She is currently a
sophomore at Oregon State Univer-
sity majoring in veterinary science.
This summer she worked for OSU
toxicology professor Dr. Craig and
started her honors thesis on phypo
ruminal bio-remediation in sheep.
Wallowa County’s Chapter R of P.E.O is
hosting a 100th Anniversary celebration from
1-3 p.m. Oct. 8 at The Place (the Joseph First
Methodist Church’s new fellowship hall).
Members of several northeast area Chapters
will be attending. Women who have been schol-
arship recipients over the years are especially
encouraged to attend. Most recent Chapter R
scholarship recipients are: Erica Bailey, Jenni-
fer Foster, Tonya Neil and Wendy Stauffer.
P.E.O. is a national philanthropic education-
al organization for women whose focus is in
assisting women of all ages to purse their ed-
ucational goals.

Gary Alford
1945 to 2016
Gary Alford of Joseph
passed away recently at age
70. He was born Nov. 7, 1945
in Enterprise to Merle and
Aleene Alford.
He attended school in Jo-
seph and graduated from Jo-
seph High School in 1963. He
later attended Oregon State
University, where he earned a
degree in agriculture econom-
ics in 1971. He also served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1965-
1971 and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, and Topeka,
Kansas.
After college he resumed farming with his father, then pur-
chased his own land and established his own farm.
He married Susan Gates-Cooper on Feb. 28, 1981 in Jo-
seph. Gary and Susan loved to travel when the farming al-
lowed it. They also attended many cattle sales.
Gary is survived by wife Susan; son Lee Cooper and fam-
ily; brother John Alford and family; sister Marietta Hauser;
and all of Joseph.
He was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Aleene
and nephew Michael Hauser.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct.
1 at the VFW Hall in Enterprise. Bollman Funeral Home is
entrusted with arrangements.
Shirley Mae (Hunt) Burns
Kirk Andrew Watson
Shirley Mae (Hunt) Burns died Sept. 21, 2016. A complete
obituary will be published next week. At the family’s request, a
private memorial will be held in Marysville, Calif.
Kirk Andrew Watson, 49, formerly of Lewiston died at his
home in Joseph on Sept 24. A complete obituary with memorial
service information will be published at a later date. Bollman
Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Marian Bowen
March 30, 1918 to Sept. 19, 2016
Marian Itol Bowen, 98, of La
Grande passed away Sept. 19, 2016 at
her residence.
Marian was born March 30, 1918,
in Leap, Ore., to Louis V. and Hazel
A. (West) Lathrop. She resided in Wal-
lowa County and also in La Grande.
She graduated from Enterprise High
School. On May 15, 1937, she married
Russell Bowen.
Marian was employed as a cook for
a local restaurant. She enjoyed playing
cards, crochet, planting fl owers and making pies.
Marian is survived by daughters Shirley Bartmess (Dale)
of Hurricane, Utah, Darlene Pithoud (John) of Enterprise and
Suzie Anderson (Chuck) of Elgin; brother Wayne Lathrop of
Enterprise; sisters Mary Lou Huffman of La Grande and Sally
Akin of Lostine; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and
11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russell, son
R. Glenn Bowen, daughter Nancy E. Bowen, parents Louis
and Hazel, brothers Quentin, Jiggs, Leo (Tuff), Harold, Emra
(Duke) and Melvin and sisters Hazel Muriel, Marcel Walker
and Gladys Yost.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1
at Wallowa Cemetery.

Eva R. Wheeler of Enterprise died Sept. 25 at Wallowa Me-
morial Hospital at age 80. A complete obituary with memorial

Joan Fager
Feb. 16, 1944 to Sept. 21, 2016
Joan Maxine (Harmon)
Fager of Walla Walla, former-
ly of Milton-Freewater, passed
away Sept. 21, 2016 at her
home at the age of 72 years
with her husband and son by
her side.
Joan was born Feb. 16,
1944 in Enterprise to Jack and
Maxine Harmon. She grad-
uated from Enterprise High
School in 1962 and shortly
thereafter moved to La Grande
with her family. She attended Eastern Oregon College for two
years while working various jobs, including a stint at A&W
Drive-In, where she met her future husband, Leland Fager.
The couple was married on July 19, 1964.
Leland and Joan had three children: Jon, Jenifer and Lisa.
In 1977, the family moved from Oregon to Sitka, Alaska. Joan
worked for the Sitka School District, fi rst as a paraprofession-
al and later as an administrative secretary. After retiring from
the school district, Joan explored some part-time opportuni-
ties working with a real estate offi ce. This sparked an interest
that led to Joan and Leland opening Angler’s Landing Bed and
Breakfast and operating vacation rentals in Sitka.
After 29 Alaska winters, the Fagers moved back to Oregon
and took up residence in Milton-Freewater next door to their
life-long friends, the Stricklers. Their fi nal home was The Odd
Fellows Home in Walla Walla.
Joan was a domestic diva who loved cooking, sewing,
crafting and all things Martha Stewart. She also was an avid
volunteer who shared of her time, energy and talents with
Rainbow Girls, Al Kader Shrine Divan Ladies, Daughters of
the Nile and Emblem Club.
Joan was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Har-
mon. She is survived by her husband Leland Fager of Walla
Walla; father Jack Harmon of La Grande; sisters Julie Hick-
erson of La Grande and Jean Talbott of Portland; brother Bill
Harmon of La Grande; son Jon Fager of Walla Walla; daughter
Jenifer Fager of Interlochen, Mich.; daughter Lisa Hutton of
Sitka, Alaska; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mul-
tiple nieces and nephews; and many great friends.
Memorial services were held Sept. 27 at the Mun-
selle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater. Memorial
contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hos-
pice or Shriner’s Hospital through the funeral home.

This week’s athlete of the week is
local archery phenom Cole Gomes. The
14-year-old, who has won several na-
tional archery awards in his age group
over the summer, recently proved he
could take his expertise to the field as
well.
Hunting in the Imnaha unit for
his “First Elk” archery hunt, Gomes
managed to drop a 7x7 elk by getting
within 23 yards of the animal.
The Enterprise High School freshman
enjoys a number of outdoor pursuits
and is a member of both FFA and 4-H.
He make regular appearances on the
school honor roll as well.
