Dodgeball tournament beneits family
Fundraiser for
Karlee Riggs of
Enterprise raised
$3,776
By Kathleen Ellyn
Wallowa County Chieftain
No one broke a hip at the dodge-
ball tournament fundraiser for Kar-
lee Gene Riggs of Enterprise last
Saturday evening on the tennis
courts at Enterprise City Park.
That wasn’t a concern for the
kids team, the high school team or
the college-age teams, but there
was a lot of ribbing along those
lines aimed at the combined Oregon
Department of Transportation and
Enterprise City Road Crew team
“Road Kill,” which included some
fellas with, shall we say, tenure
within their departments.
“You guys better start stretching;
you’re up next,” teased event co-or-
ganizer Heather Pool.
In all, 13 teams paid a $100 entry
for the pleasure of pelting friends
and neighbors for a good cause
— raising money for Karlee Gene
Riggs to get her back on her feet
after cancer treatment and ongoing
treatment for a genetic disorder that
was revealed during treatment. The
genetic disorder is Fanconi anemia,
which results in decreased produc-
tion of all types of blood cells. The
disorder prevents Riggs from un-
dergoing chemotherapy should her
cancer return. It also may require
a bone marrow transplant down
the road. Riggs’ entire family has
been genetically mapped to ind a
suitable donor should that become
necessary.
The Riggs family has had as-
tounding bad luck with cancer. Kar-
lee’s grandfather Marlin Riggs died
in 2014 due to complications with
leukemia. Her father Coy is just
home from cancer surgery followed
by treatment, and her mother Jody
is a cancer survivor.
Karlee and her parents have been
off work for months due to the can-
cer treatments. Event organizers

Joseph man dies after crash near Minam
Wallowa County Chieftain
A single-vehicle crash on
Highway 82 near Minam on
Monday afternoon resulted
in the death of a Joseph man,
authorities reported Tuesday
morning.
Oregon State Police troop-
ers and emergency personnel
responded to the crash site
near milepost 31 (Minam
Grade) just after 3 p.m.
A preliminary investi-
gation revealed that an old-
er-model Dodge farm truck
operated by Gary Leonard Al-
ford, 70, of Joseph was trav-
eling eastbound down Minam
Grade when his vehicle failed
to negotiate a curve. The vehi-
cle left the roadway and trav-
eled down the embankment,
where Alford was ejected, of-
icials say.
Emergency services per-
sonnel extracted Alford from
the hillside below the road-
way. Life Flight arrived on
scene but Alford had suc-
cumbed to his injuries before
he could be evacuated from
the scene.
Authorities say witness
statements and some scene
evidence suggest that an
equipment failure may have
been a contributing factor in
the crash.
The highway was closed
for two hours while the inves-
tigation was being conducted.
OSP was assisted by Oregon
Department of Transporta-
tion, Elgin Fire, Union Coun-
ty Sheriff’s Ofice and Wal-
lowa County Sheriff’s Ofice.
