A18 Sports wallowa.com RODEO ergetic ride that netted a score of 74. In bull riding, Chase Dougherty of Woodburn, Ore., posted a 75 and Allen Helmuth of Redmond, Ore., had a 72. They were the only two bull riders to stay aboard for eight seconds on Friday. Clint Nyegaard won tie- down roping with a time of 10.4 seconds in a run that saw him take up almost half of the arena to catch the calf. A quick and sure tie secured the win, though. Fellow Texan Cimarron Boardman claimed second with a time of 12.4 seconds. Continued from Page A12 Eventual barrel racing champ Callahan Crossley of Hermiston had the ride of the week Thursday night — 17.11 seconds. That’s just 12 one-hundredths of a second off of Julie Williams’ 16.99 recorded 30 years ago in 1986. Barrel man and all-around entertainer John Harrison kept the audience in stitches with his banter with announc- er Jody Carper. An accom- plished trick rider, Harrison wowed the crowd with his saddle antics. Timed events saw stock that gave every cowboy a run for their money. A number of steers slipped straight through the hands of bulldoggers, and snaky calves and steers led to a number of empty loops for both tie-down and team rop- ers. Barrel racing saw only one contestant knocking down a barrel, while the always pop- ular mutton busting and wild cow milking events gave a few youngsters and amateurs a chance to shine. The mini-bull riding gave several youth the opportunity to show off their skills while two bullighters showed their mettle, braving an enraged mini-bull while extracting a young man who had become entangled in his rigging. The overall performanc- es energized the crowd to a point of constant roaring after a number of stellar per- formances spread across the events, particularly with the announcement of Kolbaba’s triumph in the bull riding after that inal event ended. Team roper and Crane, Ore., cowboy Ryan Opie won the coveted Harley Tucker Rodeo Award for his sterling performances in a series of four rodeos — The Eastern Oregon Livestock Show, the Elgin Stampede, the St. Paul Rodeo and Chief Joseph Days. CJD Princess Taylor Grote and her horse took a tumble in the arena during pre-rodeo activities on Friday night. The horse stumbled and fell while taking a corner at high speed, and Grote was thrown forward off her ride. Friday: DeMoss posts 83 on ‘wild’ night Just when we thought that the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo was settling into a routine, they went and rolled out a brand new event — Wild Cow Milking. It’s a combination of team roping, bulldogging and getting lunch at Dairy Queen. It all starts at the east end of the arena. A cow, re- plete with horns, charges out of the chute. A roper gallops after her and throws a hooli- han over her head. Or, in the case of most teams Friday night, secures just one horn in the loop. Then the bull- dogger (known oficially as the “mugger”) sprints into the arena and literally takes the cow by the horns. When she is pretty much secured, the roper leaps from his horse and dashes to the rear of the cow with a “milk bottle” in hand. It’s his job to milk the cow and collect milk in the bottle. Then the milker/rop- er sprints to the judge who checks to be sure there is actual milk in there, and the time is recorded. Wild Cow Milking was irst oficially introduced to rodeo crowds in the early 1900s and photographed at Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1924. The winning time — by Wyatt Warnock’s team — was 27.7 seconds. In what might have been the most stirring ride of the night, Cody DeMoss, cur- rently ranked 24th in world standings, put his stamp on number one in overall CJD saddle-bronc standings with a score of 83 points — two points shy of the arena record. The number two spot of the night belonged to 18-year-old Cameron Messier of Herald, Calif., with a thrilling and en- Time for a Computer Tuneup? Thursday: Rough night for rough stock riders Hometown bull-rider Derek Kolbaba’s lead in the bull riding scores stood up to a heroic three-ride assault by stunt man, actor and all- around cowboy Dylan Vick. Vick was the last bull-rid- er. His irst draw bucked bad- ly, turning his ride into more of a run straight down the arena. Vick stayed with him, but scored only 40 points. The judges offered him a re- ride. Five minutes later, Vick headed out of the chute on a new bull, but this ride, though short of eight seconds was nulliied because the bull knelt and did not break clean- ly from the chute. Vick ac- cepted the offer of a new bull, and a few minutes later with his bull rope secured, rode out of the chute again. But not for eight seconds. So, on night two, Kolbaba’s high score of 78 remained the number to beat in the bulls. Thursday night’s go-round was won by A.J. Hamre with a score of 66 — the only con- testant to rack up points. In saddle broncs, two-time PRCA world champion Taos Muncy of Corona, N.M., pre- vailed with a score of 77.5, beating Ben Londo (74.5), Clay Stremler (66) and Max Filippini (66). Ethan Talbott of Walla Walla — nephew of Dave Talbott of Joseph — stayed aboard a big sorrel horse named Chief Joseph for only a few seconds. Talbott, a former bull rider, said he switched to saddle bronc be- cause “I’d hurt my back rid- ing bulls. Saddle Bronc was supposed to be easier.” The highlight of Thurs- day’s mutton busting event was a collision with a young rider that knocked rodeo co-chairman Terry Jones to the ground. No one was in- jured, but Jones took some ribbing for the fall. On a night when sever- al barrel racers put in good times, Callahan Crossley eclipsed Wednesday eve- ning’s high score with a run of 17.11 seconds — not too far from Julie Williams’ 1986 arena record run of 16.99 sec- onds. Thursday was Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night. To help raise funds for local breast cancer screening, a pair of CJD chaps was auctioned. Amanda Fredrickson’s win- ning bid of $1,100 will go a long way toward providing that support. Wednesday: Kolbaba thrills hometown The action opened with the bareback riding, which saw winners Zach Brown and Richmond Champion rack up 83 points, nearly the high- point rides for rough stock the entire evening. High-point honors went to a mutton-busting young man who scored a whopping 92 points riding his sheep from the west to the east end of the arena and halfway back be- fore getting turfed. Some steer wrestlers fell victim to fast cattle, while winner Trevor Knowles downed his steer in 3.7 sec- onds to tie the arena record. Cowboy Justin Berg won the saddle bronc with a ride of 73.50. But it was hometown hero Kolbaba, great-grandson of local rodeo icon Harley Tuck- er, who stole the show with a magniicent ride. The stands had already given Kolbaba a rousing ova- tion when he was introduced in the pre-rodeo ceremonies. After the gate opened, the noise grew from wild ap- plause to screams and roars as it became apparent Kolba- ba would cover the bull. He scored 78 points on the ride and was the only rider to cov- er a bull. Although the rodeo was over at that point, the entire audience stayed for Kolba- ba’s horseback victory lap around the arena, during which he received a stand- ing ovation from many of the fans and more earth-shatter- ing applause. To all of you who helped make this one of the most successful rodeos ever, we thank you! Mark your calendars now for July 25-30, 2017! See you all next year! 541.432.1015 www.chiejosephdays.com DEREK KOLBABA This week’s athlete of the week is Professional Bull Riders rodeo cowboy Derek Kolbaba. The Wallowa County native who now resides in Walla Walla, Wash. smoked all comers in the bullriding event during the Chief Joseph Days rodeo last week. Riding only on the rodeo’s opening night of July 27, Kolbaba rode his bull to a 78 score, the only bull rider to even stay aboard his bull. The subsequent three nights of bullriding saw no one of- fering a serious challenge to Kolbaba’s ride, the highest attained score being a 75.5 effort. As a result, Kolbaba took home a buckle and more than $2000 in prize money. Kolbaba, 20, is currently ranked no. 10 in the world. Last year he was the youngest person to ride at the PBR world finals.
