Humane Society seeks animal stories for book
Wallowa County Chieftain
The Wallowa County Hu-
mane Society will be produc-
ing a photo-rich book with
images and stories of the out-
standing pets, working ani-
mals and service animals of
Wallowa County as a fund-
raiser to support its programs,
from spaying and neutering, to
veterinary care for abandoned
animals. All Wallowa County
residents who have dogs, cats,
horses and other animals that
have a great story to tell about
work, service or play are invit-
ed to submit an application to
include their animal.
“Wallowa County has such
amazing animals,” said Car-
ol Vencill, WCHS President.
“We want to tell their stories
and give the animals and their
owners credit for all the great
ways that our best friends help
us.”
The Humane Society is

asking for a donation of $10
to accompany each applica-
tion to help support the book
project. Applications should
be submitted by mail to the
WCHS by June 15.
With a working title of
“True Tails: The outstanding
working and companion ani-
mals of Wallowa County, Or-
egon,” the book will feature
a black-and-white portrait of
each animal, along with an
image provided by the own-
er and a 300- to 1,000-word
story. Award-winning writer
and photographer Ellen Mor-
ris Bishop has volunteered her
time to shoot the portraits and
work with each owner to tell
their animals’ stories. Bishop
will contact each owner and
arrange a time for portrait and
story session.
In addition to portraits and
stories about our outstanding
animals, the volume will con-
tain a section of information
about animal care, nutrition
and disease prevention. Those
who wish to support this por-
tion of the book project are
invited to donate $10 or more.
The book will be approxi-
mately 9 inches by 12 inches
in size, and is planed to be
available for purchase at a
price of about $25 by the end
of November. The project will
include any and all species
— dogs, cats, horses, pigs,
gerbils, ferrets, hamsters, pet
snakes — any animal that has
had a positive infl uence on
your life with a great story.

Five local students earn Rotary scholarships
Wallowa County Chieftain
The Rotary Club of Wal-
lowa County has awarded
$3,000 in total scholarships
to seniors graduating this
month from county high
schools.
The winners are:
• Emily George, Wallowa
High School – $1,000. Emily
was president of the Rota-
ry-sponsored Interact Club at
her school.
• Natalie Williams, Jo-
seph High School – $800.
• Raymond Seal, Joseph
High School – $600.
• Bette Rooney, Enter-
prise High School – $300.
• Eyreus Rooney, Enter-
prise High School – $300.
Each student will receive
his or her award at the begin-
ning of their sophomore year
of college.
Local scholarships have
been a Rotary tradition for
decades, according to Bob
Crawford, the local club’s
vocational service chair-
man.

Geneva Johnson McArtor 86, died May 26, 2016 at Wallowa
Memorial Hospital in Enterprise.
Geneva was born Oct. 19, 1929 in Wallowa. The oldest of
six children, Geneva was ever the caregiver.
Her siblings were sister Louise, brother Dallas, then three
more sisters — Donna Lee, Sue Ann and Carolyn.
Geneva graduated from Wallowa High School in 1947. In
1948 she married Ronald McArtor and they moved for a short
time to Portland, where they had son Terry Ray McArtor.
When Terry was young they returned to Lostine. Geneva
was active with Lostine City Council and in 1966 she became
co-owner of Crafts and Fabrics in Lostine and eventually four
out-of-town fabric shops.
That career lasted until 1982.
In 1983 Ronnie and Geneva divorced and Geneva moved
to Portland, where she again became active in community and
church. She also worked for 10 years at Mt. Hood Commu-
nity College.
Wherever Geneva was she was caring and considerate
of friends, neighbors and co-workers. She leaves a host of
family and friends who will miss her dearly. Geneva was ac-
tive with Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church in Portland,
where she served as a Deacon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Louise
Moffi t, brother Dallas, grandson Ryan McArtor and ex-hus-
band Ronnie.
She is survived by son Terry (Janie) McArtor, grandson
Sam (Jennifer) McArtor, great-grandsons McCoy and Cord
McArtor, and sisters Donna Lee Yonce, Sue Ann Crowe and
Carolyn (John) Berland.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June
18 at Bramlett Cemetery in Wallowa with dinner to follow at
the Wallowa Senior Center.
In lieu of fl owers she requested memorial donations be
made to her beloved church: Savage Memorial Presbyterian
Church, 1740 SE 139th Ave., Portland, OR, 97233.

Joan Marie Pierce (Valladao), beloved wife, mother, grand-
mother and great-grandmother, passed away May 27, 2016 at
age 81 after a long struggle with cancer. She passed peacefully
in her sleep, with her family by her side. Joan lived and died
in Escalon, Calif., but she split her time between there and the
beautiful mountain scenery of Enterprise, where she maintained
a second home.
Joan was born in San Mateo, Calif., the fi rst of three chil-
dren born to Frank and Erda (Coats) Valladao, and was raised in
Redwood City, Calif., where she attended Sequoia High School.
Shortly after graduating, she met and married Garnett Pierce,
with whom she raised a family of fi ve children and recently
celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Joan spent her professional career in the title business as
an escrow offi cer, retiring after 40 years. In retirement, she
enjoyed fi shing and traveling, once driving the length of the
Alaska Highway all the way to the Arctic Circle. It was not
uncommon for Joan to reel in the biggest fi sh on the boat. She
also was a member of the High Wallowa Red Hat Society and
enjoyed crafts and cooking. She entered many of her creations
in the Wallowa County Fair, where she won many blue ribbons.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sister Bette Deck-
man; daughter Patricia Solis; and son Thomas Pierce. She is
survived by husband Garnett Pierce; brother Gerald of Vallad-
ao, Texas; sons Michael Pierce of Orangevale, Calif., and Dan-
iel Pierce of Modesto, Calif.; daughter Lynda Hibner of Austin,
Texas; grandchildren Jennifer Loncaric, Jason Yoder, Brandon
Pierce, Tyler Pierce, Thomas Pierce and Rachel Dodge; seven
great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 5 at Lakewood
Memorial Park in Hughson, Calif. In lieu of fl owers, the fam-
ily encourages contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Former Baker County resident Carmie Bunde died at her
home in Elgin on June 4, 2016 at age 71. A family gathering
will be held when her son returns home from Afghanistan. Ar-
rangements are under the direction of Tami’s Pine Valley Fu-
