EHS senior Nathan Perren led the way for the boys with a third place in the 100 meters while winning the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump. He also ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x100 relay team. The Outlaws girls placed fourth in the meet with 93 points, behind Union, Burns and Grant Union. Shin- ing for the girls were Stacy Douglass, who placed irst and second in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hur- dles, respectively. She also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team. Enterprise/Wallowa is sending 12 individuals to state in the relays and more as individual competitors. “The kids really stepped up,” Moody said. “Even those kids who didn’t qualify for state got personal bests or season bests for the year.” Joseph track also is send- ing a number of competitors to state from the girls team after their May 13 district meet in Ontario. Annie Duncan took gold in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay while scoring silvers in the 300-meter hur- dles and the 100 meters. The Eagles boys had two top-three inishes, both by Tyler Homan, who placed second in the 3000 meters and third in the 800 meters. Ben Lopez contributed a ifth-place performance in the discus, as did TJ Grote in the pole vault. Eagles coach John Rob- erts said he was impressed with the team’s performance as he was sending 10 mem- bers on to state. He also ex- pects the team to do well as a whole. “I expect our distance run- ning will keep us right at the top,” he said. He said the girls 4x100 relay team performance was among the top highlights of the district meet. “They were on the bub- well. Not just one person, but everybody did what they were supposed to do.” Wallowa Valley (10-6 league, 12-10 overall) was set to face Stanield/Echo once again on the road Tues- day in a district playoff game to determine who advances to state. Results of that game were unavailable as The Chieftain went to press Tues- day afternoon. Baseball: Eagles swept at home Wallowa Valley baseball did not fare nearly so well as the Cubs, dropping both ends of their Echo/Stanield double- header 15-2 and 13-5. The irst game saw Joseph pitching serving up two home runs while walking ive and hitting four batters. The Eagles also committed three errors. Josh Rummell took the loss, with Will McCadden showing up in relief with two outs in the fourth and going the distance from there. Rum- mell had three strikeouts on the game. The 10-run rule was applied after the ifth inning. The Eagles saw some bright spots on the hitting end with four players tallying a single each and freshman Gus Ramsden blasting a two-run home run in the ifth inning. Stanield/Echo kept rolling in the second game with two more home runs. The game was tied 3-3 score after three innings with Justin Exon on the mound. Exon was tagged with the loss and both Ramsden and Rylie Hayward pitched in re- lief. The pitching staff gave up a combined seven walks and ive hit batsmen, while the de- fense committed seven errors. Exon went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Chris Bathke was 2 for 2. Josh Rummell and Tate Olsen con- tributed an RBI each. Even with the loss, the fourth-place Eagles (4-8, 7-15) could still secure a spot at state with a win Tuesday at Nyssa, the third place team in the Eastern Oregon League. Nyssa swept a doubleheader in early April at Enterprise, 6-4 and 7-4. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Cooney placed first in the triple jump with a 32-07.50 effort while placing second in the javelin with a toss of 112-11 and second in the high jump with a leap of 5-01.
