A2 Community/Obituaries wallowa.com 4-H students earn high marks at 2016 Spring Horse Classic Wallowa County Chieftain Nine outstanding Wallowa County 4-H students compet- ed against more than 150 other 4-H members in the 2016 4-H Spring Horse Classic, held in Marion County from April 29 to May 1. Teagan Miller, Deidre Schreiber, Maddie Tracy and Gabrielle Wells placed fi rst in the state Hippology Competi- tion, earning the right to rep- resent Oregon at the national competition in Kentucky in November. The Intermediate Horse Judging team placed fourth in the state competition. The Horse Judging team consisted of Casidee Harrod, Brianna Micka, Maggie Zach- arias and Rylee Wilcox. Micka placed second in Judging and Harrod placed 10th. The Hippology team con- sisted of Chance Arbogast, Maggie Zacharias, Harrod and Wilcox. The Horse Bowl Team con- sisted of Schreiber, Harrod, Arbogast, Zacharias and Wil- cox, who placed 8th overall. Wells placed fi rst in Senior Presentation. Chance Arbogast placed third in Intermediate Presentation. Schreiber placed fi rst in Intermediate Prepared Public Speaking. Jill Arbogast coached the senior teams and Ilene Wells Kirkpatrick retiring Wallowa County Chieftain After 15 years of service at Com- munity Bank in Joseph, VP/Controller Kendra Kirkpatrick is retiring. Kirkpat- rick started with the bank in 2001 as an accounting clerk. She was promoted to accountant in 2004, to assistant con- troller in 2005, and to VP/controller in 2011. The Joseph branch will host an in- formal reception in her honor from 2-5 p.m. Thursday, May 12. The reception is open to the community, and cake and punch will be served. Kirkpatrick previously worked for the city of Ocean Shores, city of Lake Forest Park and city of Carnation, Wash., holding positions such as deputy clerk, treasurer, accountant and assess- ment/accounting clerk. “The challenges I’ve encountered and the opportunities I’ve been given at Community Bank helped to solidify my career in accounting, most especially the assistance and support for complet- ing my BS degree in 2009 from EOU in Business Administration/Accounting,” Kirkpatrick said. “While the organi- zation has been great to work for, it’s really all about the people I’ve worked with.” Bank offi cials say her commitment to detail, work ethic and friendly at- titude has made her a favorite among those who have worked with her over the years. This year’s theme is “Through the Years.” There will be a chili feed at 1 p.m. Sat- urday. Bring your musical instruments for Saturday evening. Sunday will begin with church service at 10:30 a.m. The potluck and program will start at 1 p.m. This year’s event will honor our friend Marcella Britton. Her family and friends are invited to bring lawn chairs, table service, and to make one of her favorite dishes for Sunday’s potluck in her mem- ory. Her graveside service will follow at approximately 3:30 p.m. Those with Promise roots, friends and guests are welcome. Hawkinson Jan. 26, 1930 to May 2, 2016 James E. Hawkinson of Wallowa passed away May 2, 2016 in La Grande. Jim was born Jan. 26, 1930 in La Crosse, Wisc. He was a Wallowa resident for the past 20 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting his entire life. He loved horses and owned many during his lifetime. Jim met Mary Thorne about fi ve years ago, and it was love at fi rst sight. They were married May 6, 2011, and enjoyed fi ve happy years together. Jim was preceded in death by his mother Lillian Hawkinson, father Clarence Hawkinson and brothers Robert and Bruce. He is survived by wife Mary; sons Danny Hawkinson and Gene Anderson; daughters Debra Hagen, Phyllis Glass and Diane Tolotti; brother Ron Hawkinson (wife Yvonne) of Thompson Falls, Mont.; sister June Jones (husband Robert) of Wallowa; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held May 6 at the Wallowa Ceme- tery. Bollman Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements. Marcella Britton July 3, 1923 to March 7, 2016 Marcella Britton (nee Lew- is) of Fredericksburg, Texas, passed away March 7, 2016, at age 92. She was born July 3, 1923, in San Antonio, the daughter of Alonzo Lewis and Stella Usener Lewis. She worked as a registered nurse at the Wallowa Memorial Hospi- tal and married Dewitt Britton on Oct. 12, 1948, in Enterprise. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dewitt in 1989, sister Doreen Kreimeyer and brother Alonzo Lewis III. Marcella is survived by three sons and their spouses — Lew- is Britton of Lostine; Paul and Sharon Britton of Enterprise; and Perry and Alla Britton — as well as six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service led by Pastor Dave Bruce will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Promise Cemetery following the Promise Memorial day picnic. Donald Keith Reece Sept. 10, 1924 to April 27, 2016 Donald Keith Reece passed away April 27, 2016 at his Ar- izona home with Inge, his wife of 66 years, at his side. Donald was born Sept. 10, 1924. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 22 years. He also was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge who earned the Pur- ple Heart, Bronze Star and Air medal, among others. Donald enjoyed playing poker and loved the friends he made while playing. He is survived by Inge; daughter Tina Reece; grandsons Jus- tin Reece and Trevor Espinosa; brother Melvin Reece (and wife Helen); nephew Glen Reece; niece Vickie Reece; and several great-grandchildren. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7 at East Lawn Palms Mortuary, 5801 E. Grant St. in Tucson, Ariz.
