A6 Community wallowa.com April 27, 2016 Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa Sun building burns down 100 YEARS AGO April 27, 1916 • Under the direction of their teacher, Miss Josie A. Butterield, eighth grade pupils of Joseph visited Enterprise last week. They had planned to walk down, but four own- ers of automobiles would not listen to this and brought them down in their cars. While the chief object of interest in town was the plant of the East Ore- gon Lumber company, the pu- pils made their irst stop at the Record Chieftain shop where they were most cordially wel- comed. • An experiment with the object of learning whether the old red ish that illed the lake and the streams of the county in early days, can be brought back is being made by the state ish and game commission. A total of six cars or 2,100,000 ish will be planted in the lake. The ish are blue black salmon, the correct name for the old red ish. • The public mass meet- ing to consider the site for the new home for the schools of Enterprise, has been called for Tuesday evening. At that time the board and commit- tee will make report … on all matters affecting both site and building. One site naturally is the block on which the grade school building now stands, with the addition of the block immediately west of it. The other site proposed embraces what is known as the old brew- ery property just south of the lume, on River street, and the tract west of this, extending through to Depot street. 70 YEARS AGO May 2, 1946 • The seniors at E.H.S. went on their annual picnic last Fri- day. After the banquet all went to the skating rink at Zuber hall. They were chap- eroned by Mr. Hockett, Mr. Zike, Mrs. Cofin and Mrs. N. B. Sandlin. • Eight people were hospi- talized as the result of injuries received in two car wrecks last week. A car driven by Fred Coker went off the highway just south of the Eggleson curve on the Joseph highway last Wednesday. Saturday night a truck driven by Frank McCulloch of Wallowa went off the highway near the Ed Hook place between Lostine and Wallowa and several of the McCulloch children were seriously injured. • Baseball had its come- back in Wallowa county last Sunday when the Enterprise town team went to Joseph for a game and won by a score of 17 to 7. Play of course was ragged due to insuficient practice and a rough ield. Base hits were plentiful, as were errors. The Enterprise lineup included Lee Corbin, Harold Burgett, Bob Storm, Marvin Vancil, Klon Matthews, Deb Denney, Wing- ert Walker, Jack Hays and Jim Hombel. Others playing were Don Kirkman, Merwyn Zoll- man and Tony Goebel. 50 YEARS AGO April 28, 1966 • One of the oldest build- ings on Main street in Wal- Chieftain archives Date and location unknown. lowa went up in smoke Sun- day when the Wallowa ire department burned it to the ground. The building was the original home of the Wal- lowa Sun, a weekly newspa- per published at Wallowa for many years. It was also oper- ated as a blacksmith shop by Bill Skelton. The structure stood at the corner near the McCrae residence and the old Wallowa County Cream- ery buildings. • Photo caption: The cor- nerstone was layed at the new federal building in Enterprise Friday. Shown lowering the heavy stone into place are Leon Bock, in charge of block and masonry work on the project, and Elvin Mc- Cullough, superintendent for the prime contractor. Mc- Cullough is holding a box which contains current docu- ments and a current copy of the Wallowa County Chief- tain. The box was embedded in the cornerstone. • The wives of the third of three Boise Cascade crews at Joseph were paid tribute by the management of the cor- poration Saturday night for their part in the safety pro- gram at the Joseph mill. The occasion was a record of 800 days without a lost-time ac- cident by the crew. Each of the ladies present received an electric carving knife as a gift from the company. • News from Lostine: Mrs. Kenneth Mofit ordered a monkey for her sons, Jerry and Gary, from Florida. They named it Ringo.
