Brandon Roberts — ready to serve his country.
Roberts completes
USMC basic training
By Steve Tool
Wallowa County Chieftain
A fourth generation of the
Roberts family Marine Corps
enlistees just graduated from
basic training in San Diego on
Dec. 12.
Brandon Roberts is the
son of former Wallowa
County residents Craig and
Lisa Roberts of Lewiston
and grandson of Everett and
Dana Roberts, who work at
the Wallowa County Court-
house.
Brandon also is the grand-
son of Wallowa County Sher-
iff Steve Rogers. Both sides
of Roberts’ family traveled to
San Diego to attend his grad-
uation.
Vietnam veteran Everett
Roberts said he is very proud
his grandson is continuing a
family tradition.
“Brandon’s dad joined the
Marines in 1989 and served in
Desert Storm, and my own fa-
ther joined in 1944 and fought
LQWKH3DFL¿FDQGZDVZRXQG
ed in Okinawa,” Everett said.
Brandon is serving a four-
year enlistment and currently
is home on leave. He said
he always intended to serve.
Originally, he intended to
serve in the Navy as a Hospi-
tal Corpsman, many of whom
are assigned to a Marine
Corps unit. At the time, the
Navy had no openings for the
rating. This did not deter Rob-
erts, who immediately visited
a Marine corps recruiter who
had plenty of openings for
infantryman. He immediately
enlisted.
Roberts recommends high
school students without a
clear sense of direction join
the service to learn discipline.
“It’s a real learning experi-
ence and teaches you real-life
and adult skills.
Sheriff Rogers found him-
self very impressed with the
new Marine, who spent past
summers helping him prepare
for the Chief Joseph Days Ro-
deo.
“I just had lunch with him
the other day, and he’s pretty
dedicated — about as gung-
ho as they get,” he said. “I’m
unbelievably proud of him,
and he’s a great kid.”
Upon his return from
leave, Brandon Roberts will
start his initial infantry train-
ing at Camp Pendleton in
Southern California.
