Capt. Potter of Joseph guides Vietnam rescue
100 YEARS AGO
Dec. 9, 1915
• The pupils of the Sasser
school, District 63, with Mrs.
Lulu M. Bowlby as teach-
er, gave an entertainment on
Thanksgiving night. The liter-
ary and musical program was
followed by a box supper. The
proceeds were used to buy a
good organ, lamp and music
for the school. The names of
these enterprising and studi-
ous pupils are Lester and June
Birdsell, Mae Barnes, Frebert
and Edna Otto, and Milton,
Louisa, Robert and Susie
Sasser.
• Arrested on a charge of
obtaining money under false
pretenses, E. O. Hoisington,
an agent for the Columbia
Harbor Land Company, and
selling Warrenton lots, is in
the county jail. He was arrest-
ed by Sheriff Marvin Tues-
day, on the train at Enterprise
as he was on his way out,
after canvassing Joseph. The
complaint was signed by two
Joseph school teachers, Miss
Lexie Strachan and Miss Jes-

er Joseph teachers said they
had bought Warrenton lots of
Hoisington.
• With the damage suit of
Mrs. Ella Clayton against the
Enterprise Electric company
on trial before a jury, Circuit
Court is in session this week.
Mrs. Clayton sued for $25,000
damages because of the death
of her husband, W. S. Clayton,
in Carl Roe’s power pumping
plant in the summer of 1912.

Dec. 13, 1945
• At their meeting held
Mountains west of Cove, was
found last Friday. He had ap-
parently died from exposure
within 24 hours of leaving
his base camp …. although
he was packing a survival kit,

may be closed for a longer
period if the illness is still
widespread.
• Wallowa County was the
second county in the state to
exceed its quota in E bond
sales during the Victory loan.
Sales on Dec. 7 had reached
$123,441 or 107.3 percent of
quota.

lot on a U.S. Air Force rescue
crew which recently ended

an airman downed in Viet

piloted his HH-43 helicop-
ter to the hazardous rescue
of Captain Melvin C. Elliott
from an enemy infested area.

tary School, where a wind-
storm last Tuesday morning
