Teagan Miller — daugh- ter of Cheri and Alan Miller of Wallowa — took the top award of $2,000 to purchase a bred heifer. Teagan, 16, is a sophomore at Wallowa High, a member of the Wallowa Trailblazers 4-H Club, an FFA member and a past member of the 2014 4-H Court. Miller added a Red Angus heifer from Alan Klages ranch to her farmstead collection of rabbits, chickens, a mule and a longhorn heifer. Miller named her sweet- faced heifer “Hael” after a fan- tasy “angel of kindness.” The Stockgrowers had planned to award another three scholarships in the amount of $1,000, but the next four pre- senters were so good that the selection committee decided to up the award to four, said Alan Klages, president of Wallowa County Stockgrowers. The four $1,000 awards to be applied toward the purchase of a heifer went to Zane Her- mens of Wallowa, son of Car- rie and Levi Hermens; Mad- die McDowell of Enterprise, daughter of Amber and Matt McDowell; Haley Miller of Joseph, daughter of Dena and Cory Miller; and Emma Hite Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain Rancher Alan Klages of Enterprise makes out a shipping slip for Teagan Miller’s new bred of Joseph, daughter of Jill and Jim Miller. The scholarship recently was expanded due to the sale of 20 heifers donated by nu- merous local stockgrowers. All 20 heifers were bred to Klages’ red Angus bulls before being offered for sale. Trevor Wentz, 20, of En- terprise purchased the herd of bred heifers to add to a larger herd he is building this year. Wentz had applied for the Stockgrowers scholarship him- self during his school years, but never won, he said. Now, he’s brought some really good heifers to his family’s ranch in the Swamp Creek area.
