Rachel lives in La Grande. The Sines family lived in Wallowa for 10 years when Rachel’s husband Roy Sines worked for the U.S. Forest Service as district rang- er. All three of their children graduated from Wallowa High School. Relatives traveled from North Carolina, Mon- tana, Idaho and Oregon for the celebration at Three Island Crossing State Park historical site on the Oregon Trail. One day was spent on the lake at Bruneau Sand Dunes in Idaho. Former city of Enterprise engineer Ralph Swinehart didn’t celebrate his 70th birth- day in a wheelchair. Instead, he spent it on the road bik- ing a mile for each of his 70 years. “I just decided I wanted to ride my age on my birthday,” Swinehart said. “I’ve been thinking about it since last summer.” Swinehart works at his RZQ HQJLQHHULQJ ¿UP :DO lowa Mt. Engineering in En- terprise. He spent some time on his bike beforehand, shap- ing up for the odyssey. He trained for the ride on his vin- tage 1981 Schwinn Voyager. “I used to ride a lot more than I do now,” he said, “I’m trying to get back into it.” Swinehart’s 70-mile route took him and a few friends 35 miles up Highway 3, ending 0.7 miles north of the Flo- ra junction before turning around for the return journey. He said he never thought of quitting any time during the ride. “No, not really,” he said. “But it turned into a harder ride than we expected. We had a strong tailwind going up, but a strong headwind coming back.” Swinehart’s partner, Janet Steve Tool/Chieftain Septuagenarian Ralph Swinehart and his trusty Schwinn Voyager bicycle. Swinehart rode the bike 70 miles in honor of his 70th birthday on Oct. 31. Pulsifer, and a friend made the trip via vehicle in order to provide lunch at Joseph Overlook for the travelers during their seven-hour trip. A mix-up found Swinehart with the only lunch, so he split his sandwich, chips and cook- ies with his comrades. Swine- hart said they needed it. “When we got to the sum- mit, which is 1000 feet higher than Enterprise, we thought we’d have an easy ride com- ing back in. With that 20 mph headwind, it felt like we gained 2000 feet in eleva- tion!” Swinhart already has plans for future birthday journeys. “All downhill with a tail- wind,” he said. “I might change over to kilometers as well.” D EATH N OTICE About Obituaries News obituaries are a free service of the Wallowa County Chieftain. She was the youngest of six children, four brothers and one sister who lovingly called her “Honey.” Pat graduated in 1945 from Emmett High School, where she enjoyed cheerleading and playing the trombone in the school band. On April 6, 1946 Pat mar- ried William H. Noland (Bill) in Emmett, Idaho. She then worked and helped Bill graduate from Pharmacy School at Idaho State University. In 1968 Pat and Bill purchased Economy Drug in Enterprise, Ore. They worked hard with the help of many employees to make their business successful. Many thanks to the people of Wallowa County who were patrons of Bill’s economy Drug Store. In 1986 they retired. They thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and made many friends at Alpine Meadows. To all the grandkids Pat was known as Grandma Trisha. She was a very loving grandmother and always had a smile and a twinkle in her eye and enjoyed taking care of the grandkids during spring breaks, the summer and vacations. Pat was a de- voted wife for over 61 years, a generous and loving mother and grandmother. She loved each of her dogs that she had over the years and taught them many tricks to our amazement. She liked to take long walks and exercised daily to keep in shape. After a month-long courageous battle following open heart surgery with multiple strokes, Pat passed away peacefully sur- rounded by her loving family. Pat is survived by her three sons, Scott (wife Doris), Mike (wife Pam) and Joe (wife Teri), along with 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
