Robert William Garver, Jr.
Nov. 4, 1927 - Sept. 22, 2015
Robert “Bob” William Garver, Jr. transitioned to heaven Sept. 22,
2015 at Park Manor Care Center in Walla Walla, Wash. He was 87
years old.
Bob was born November 4, 1927 in Vancouver, Wash., to Robert
:*DUYHU6UDQG%HUHQLHWK5H[*DUYHU
He graduated from Washougal, Wash., High School in 1946. He
attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland where he studied pre-
law. While attending Lewis and Clark he met Joyce Ellen Gittings
IURP&DPDV:DVK7KH\JUDGXDWHGLQ-XQHRIDQGZHUHPDU
ried on June 24. While Joyce taught school, in Monmouth, Bob went
to Willamette Law School in Salem, graduating in 1953.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Ord in Calif.
While stationed there, their eldest son, Jeffrey William was born in
February of 1955. After leaving the service later in 1955, Bob and his

and went into law practice with his father in Camas.
In June of 1965 their daughter Julie Ellen was born, followed in

divorced in April of 1978.
In October of 1978, Bob met Kathryn “Kaye• Lea (Mundell) Ga-
GDLUH7KH\PDUULHGLQ$SULORILQ9DQFRXYHU7KH\OLYHGLQIRXU
different places in Washougal and Camas.
Bob retired in 1983 after practicing law for 28 years.
In the fall of 1999, Bob and Kaye moved to Joseph to run the
Wallowa Lake United Methodist Church Camp, a job they both en-

He loved classical and sacred music. He also liked to sing and
dance. He and Joyce sang in several different choirs and chorales
LQWKH3RUWODQG9DQFRXYHUDUHD7KH\DOVRZHUHLQVHYHUDOPXVLFDOV
and many Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. Bob would often break out
LQVRQJUHOLYLQJKLVYDULRXVUROHV7KH\ZHUHDOVR%DOOURRP'DQFH
champions at Lewis and Clark.
Bob and Kaye enjoyed spending a Friday or Saturday night danc-
ing and listening to many different bands. Kaye also shared his love
of classical and sacred music.
Bob liked to play golf, even when it was frustrating. He also
really appreciated Boy Scouts, hiking, snowmobiling, hunt-
LQJFDPSLQJZDWHUVNLLQJ¿VKLQJSOD\LQJPDQ\GLIIHUHQWFDUG
games and taking long drives. He was known for hiking without
paths and driving on back roads even the forest service wouldn’t
use. He was a Scout Master in Camas for many hears. His troops
KLNHGWKH3DFL¿F&UHVW7UDLOLQPLOHVHJPHQWVHDFKVXPPHU
He had many stories about those hikes that he shared with anyone
who would listen.
He belonged to many organizations besides choirs and scouting.

Lodge, Stevenson Eagles, Wallowa Valley Chorale, Lostine Presby-
terian Church and Joseph United Methodist Church Choirs and the
Joseph American Legion.
He spent many hours working on vehicles; repairing, maintain-
ing and re-building any motor vehicle he could, until computers took
over. After retiring, he also relished “hands on” jobs such as logging
and construction.
He is survived by his second wife, Kaye, his daughter, Julie of

Although he was dubbed · “Hurricane Bob” by his children for
his quick temper, he was a kind man who would help people in any
ZD\ SRVVLEOH LQ WLPHV RI QHHG HVSHFLDOO\ VWUDQJHUV LQ QHHG 7KH
words “I love you” and “I’m proud of you” were not easy for him to
YRLFHEXWKHWULHGWRVKRZWKRVHHPRWLRQVZLWKDFWLRQV7KRXJKKH
will be missed dearly, he will not be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday October 17 at Wal-
lowa United Methodist church in Wallowa at 1 p.m., with Rev. Steve
Kliewer presiding; a second Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m.,
Saturday October 24 in the Fireside Room of St. John’s Presbyterian
Church in Camas with Dr. Ed Me Aninch presiding.

Corinne Hilding
Feb. 29, 1928 - Aug. 4, 2015
Corinne B Hilding, 87, of San Jose, Calif., died August 4,
2015 at Hospice of the Valley in
Goodyear, Ariz.
Corinne was born to Fred
and Helen Beaudoin February
29, 1928 in Joseph. She grew up
riding her horse Ginger to a one
room schoolhouse in Imnaha.
She lost her only brother, Fred-
erick, in World War II.
She became a very accom-
plished piano player and grad-
uated from Washington State
University in 1951 with an

was born in 1959. In 1965 the family settled in San Jose, Calif.

Corinne grew up on a ranch and loved animals, her family,
gardening, everything Christmas, classic Hollywood movies and
the color pink. She was especially proud of her grandchildren,
Bjorn and Leif.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Richard, her son
.HYLQ7KHUHVDDQGKHUJUDQGVRQV
Burial will be in Richard’s hometown of Lewiston, Idaho Oc-
tober 17 at Normal Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m.
Service arrangements are under the direction of Vassar Rawls
Funeral Home in Lewiston, Idaho.
Memorial contributions can be made to any no-kill animal
shelter.
Vern Skillings
May 16, 1930 - Oct. 7, 2015
Vern Skillings, 85, of Wallowa died October 7, 2015 in Union.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 17 at 11 a.m.
at Bramlet Cemetery in lower Wallowa Valley. Sharing mem-
ories of Vern and a potluck dinner will follow at the Wallowa
Church of Christ. Services will be conducted by his nephew, Pas-
tor Weldon Shuman.
Vern was born May 16,1930, in Wallowa to Amos Benjamin
and Cora Ellen (Boyd) Skillings. He was a fourth generation
Wallowa County resident, living the majority of his life in Wal-
ORZD+HPDUULHG5XE\/XFLOOH7KRPDVWKH\ODWHUGLYRUFHG+H
married “Virginia Remington August 3,1966 in Enterprise.
He worked as a ranch hand in his early years and later as a logger.
He was always a cowboy at heart. He and Virginia loved packing
LQWRWKHKLJK:DOORZD0RXQWDLQVDQGVKDULQJWKDWH[SHULHQFHZLWK
family and friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit, the
twinkle in his eye, and mischievous grin. He maintained his sharp
PHPRU\DQGFRQFHUQIRUFDUHJLYHUVGXULQJKLVH[WHQGHGLOOQHVV
Vern is survived by sons Dan Skillings and wife Cherie, and
John Fine and wife Sharon; siblings Johnny and wife Eunice,
Kenneth, and Carolyn Pfeaster; and numerous grandchildren,
JUHDWJUDQGFKLOGUHQDQGH[WHQGHGIDPLO\
He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, daughter Sher-
ry Lynn (Fine) Smith, brothers Ray, Neal, and Darrell, and sisters
Mina Shuman, Winifred English, and Myrna Sabey.

in care of Community Connection or to Wallowa Senior Adviso-
ry Council.

Janet Marshall “Scotty” Doyle passed away peacefully in her
sleep, with her family present, on
the morning of October 10, 2015,
from complications of cancer at
the age of 93.
Scotty was a 40-year resident
of Enterprise, having moved here
to be closer to her daughter San-
dra Miller after the birth of Scot-
W\¶V¿UVWJUDQGFKLOG
She was born in 1921 in the
small village of Braehead in La-
narkshire, Scotland to George
Brown and Martha Pearson. Her
mother passed away when she
was eight and her father took her out of school after eighth grade
to take care of the family. In 1940, she set out on her own and be-
gan the life of a world traveler. She worked in London during the
Blitz for the London transit system, before joining the Royal Air
Force (RAF) as a cryptographer for the remainder of the war. At

where she met her future husband, Alan Doyle, who was serving

Scotty was a strong believer in life-long learning and in being
responsible. If she wanted to do something and didn’t know how,
she set out to learn. Over the years she worked as a lifeguard,
a cosmetologist, swimming instructor and she taught hula, cake
decorating, calligraphy and aqua-aerobics. She was well-known
in the county as an advocate for physical activity and could often

Survivors include her son Kevin Doyle of Honolulu, daugh-
ters Karen Doyle of Annapolis and Sandra Miller of Enterprise;
grandchildren Corey Miller, Heidi Ewing of La Grande, Oregon,
and Jesse Miller; Alysn and Kaitlyn Doyle of Honolulu, and 10
great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Alan
W. Doyle Jr.
A celebration of Scotty’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday,
October 16 at the First Baptist Church of Enterprise. Internment
will be private at the Enterprise Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Wallowa Valley Health Care
Foundation.
