WALLOWA — It wasn’t exactly
a perfect afternoon on offense Fri-
day, Sept. 25, for the mighty Wal-
lowa Cougars, but they continued
to make the big play frequently
enough to run up a big 66-22 score
on their visitors from Echo, who
also lost their starting QB to proba-
ble season-ending injury.
handoff on a regular down, the
back carried the ball 69 yards for
Wallowa’s second TD, the first of
the senior’s three rushing touch-
downs on the day.
The Cougars’ other players to
score touchdowns Friday were
Frye (11-yard run), Chandler Burns
(runs of 36 and 90 yards), and Gus
Ramsden (runs of 13 and 22 yards).
This was both teams’ first
league game of 2015.
Wallowa scored early and often,
putting up a 24-0 lead by the first
quarter’s end. The combination of
quarterback Koby Frye and receiv-
er Travis Haga got it going, con-
necting for a 60-yard touchdown,
which was followed by Noah Al-
len’s successful 2-point conversion
run to make the lead 8-0. Later in
the quarter, when Allen got the

The Joseph Eagle footbal-
lers lost a heartbreaker at Pow-
der Valley in a 62-60 shootout.
Joseph had a whopping 470
yards total offense.
Caden DeLury led the team
in rushing, bruising his way
through the Powder Valley line
with 270 yards rushing on 39
carries. As quarterback, DeLury
either threw or ran for all the
team’s touchdowns. DeLury
also completed seven passes for
134 yards and two touchdowns.
Freshman Tyler Homan was re-
cipient of four passes, including
the two touchdowns.
Logan Welch had 137 yards
on 26 carries. Starting quar-
terback and middle lineback-
er Sam Beckman missed the
game due to injury.
Koehn was impressed with

the play of Homan and Trey
Wandschneider. “Tyler played
both sides of the ball the whole
game, and Trey learned a lot
as a defensive back playing
against a passing team,” Koehn
said.
Logan Welch also received
kudos from Koehn for his in-
spired playing even after be-
ing on the receiving end of a
vicious illegal “crackback”
block. “He got hit hard quite a
few times, but he just kept com-
ing back at them,” Koehn said.

Joseph starts

weekend, loses
momentum

Last weekend, Joseph’s
volleyball team faced down
Pine Eagle, beating the Spar-
tans in three games — 27-25,
25-13, 25-15. The team over-
all had 15 aces and 26 kills.
“Our team work was posi-
tive and disciplined; the girls
played with energy,” E-Gals
Coach Jill Hite said. “Tori
Suto and Kristina Humphreys
both did an amazing job com-
ing off the bench and ¿lling
roles on the Àoor. It takes an
entire team to win games.”
Individual
performances
against Pine Eagle were as

Four set personal bests, two set season bests in Idaho meet
W
allowa County performed solidly and
impressively at this weekend’s Bob Firman
Invitational cross country meet at Eagle Is-
land State Park in Idaho. Of the 10 players
who ran the 5-kilometer race, four broke
their personal records, and two more broke their best times
of the season. Coach Dan Moody’s reminder at the start of
the season appears to hold true: the team is improving solid-
ly and consistently, with an eye towards running at the state
championship at the end of the season.

Hayes Brothers racing team
ended the season strong, ¿n-
ishing 11th in a ¿eld of 18 cars
at their last race of the season
in Ephrata, Wash., on Sept. 19.
“We could have been 10th,
but we haven’t gotten the
engine quite right, and we
hadn’t been at that track, so
we weren’t sure about how
to set up for it,” Jerry Hayes
said. Hayes was referring to
the their car’s new engine.
The Hayes team decorated
their car in pink as the theme
of the race was breast cancer
awareness.
