The new ¿re started on 6at- urday, Aug. 22, way up Hur- ricane Creek 5oad a couple of miles aboYe the trailhead. That ¿re has resulted in a /eY- el 1 eYacuation warning in the area. That ¿re, named the Falls Creek Fire, was reported at 20 acres on Tuesday, Aug. 2. As of press time it is still zero percent contained, but ¿re lines haYe been built along Hurricane Creek Trail and the ridge south of Falls Creek. 5ed Àag warnings are still in effect for areas around both of these ¿res, and the ¿re dan- ger in the forests throughout the northeast is listed as ex- treme. In the Good News/Bad News column, a cold front is expected on Friday, bringing in a 60 percent chance of rain. That said, it may also bring in thunderstorms and threat of more lightning-caused ¿res. Steve Tool/Chieftain The latest news (shortly be- fore noon on Tuesday) is that a ¿re line of nearly .5 miles has been constructed along the southern perimeter and of¿cials estimate seYen more miles of line will be needed to contain the ¿re along 5oads 62 and 6212 near Troy. On the northern perime- ter of the ¿re, ¿re¿ghters are looking for places to set up their defenses, and new whiz- bang protections, such as ¿re-retardant gel spray on the surface of threatened build- ings, are being considered as a way to protect property in the Turkey Tail area in Columbia County, Wash. Just to spice things up, a new ¿re on the north edge of the Grizzly Bear Complex was reported Tuesday morn- ing. It’s been named Green 5idge and is Must acres so far. A Yehicle accident also oc- curred Monday night when a ¿re engine got too close to a road-edge in the steep country and rolled. Three ¿re¿ghters were transported to the hos- pital, but are reported to be doing well. The )orest 6erYice reports there are now approximately 66 people working on these ¿res, with 12 crews, 5 en- gines, ¿Ye helicopters and four structural Task Forces in the ¿eld. Those numbers Àuc- tuate by the hour depending on the behaYior of the ¿re. They also report that structures haYe been lost, though they don’t detail those structures at this time. Two large helicopters haYe been called in on the Grizzly Bear Complex and the Grizzly Helibase was established near Joseph — to assist with both 301 W.
