A2 Weather/Obituaries wallowa.com August 26, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain O BITUARIES Ronald Gene “Bud” Botts Feb. 22, 1950 – Aug. 15, 2015 Donna Lee McDaniel Skovlin July 10, 1931 – Aug. 14, 2015 Patricia Ann Pullen-Jones Dec. 31, 1943 – Aug. 1, 2015 Ronald Gene “Bud” Botts passed away at his home near Joseph on Aug. 15, 2015. He was a life-long Wallowa Countian in so many wonderful ways. He spent his early years in the “north end” of the county, much of his youth at Wallowa Lake and most of his life in the Joseph area. Bud was born to Melvin and Margaret (Gowey) Botts in Lewiston, Idaho. He married Cassandra (Manes) Botts in 1974. They have one son, Beau, and he gained a daughter when Beau married Kristin. Two grandsons, who were literally the light of his life, are Lane and Tilden. Bud, Lane, and Tilden spent many days together, laughing, wrestling, riding, and “doing chores.” Bud fought a sometimes losing battle against a massive infection caused by a gun-shot wound in the Vietnam War. Having served in the U.S. Army, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals, both with oak leaf clusters. In his civilian life, he was active in many community events, including the Wallowa County Fair, the Elks’ Christmas Food basket effort, and FFA assistance. He met every adversary, whether it was health or otherwise related, with amazing courage. Perhaps that’s why he was rewarded by passing in his sleep without pain or additional suffering. Not long after Bud and Cass were married, Bud worked for the Forest Service’s road crew. He then worked for the Joseph School District for nearly 30 years, where he formed incredibly positive relationships with students and staff alike, often mentoring students that needed a little extra support. After retiring from the school, Bud worked for Buckhorn Ranches, where he rode with the “old cowboys.” The past few years Bud spent many of his days riding on the “permit” watching over Beau and Kristin’s cattle. Bud’s greatest passions were his family, friends, his work, his horses and stock-dogs. He will be remembered for his problem-solving ways, his amazing work ethic and positive attitude, his wide grin and especially his superb laugh. Bud is survived by his wife, Cassandra, son Beau and daughter-in-law Kristin, two grandsons, Lane and Tilden, his mother, Margaret Botts, sister Elaine Johnston, brothers Rod Botts and Kyle Botts and numerous nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his dad, Melvin, sister Shirley Botts-Mead, and niece Sonja Johnson. Bud’s family thanks the many hundreds of friends that joined them for a celebration of his life on Aug. 22, 2015. They suggest memorial contributions be made to the Joseph, Enterprise, or Wallowa School Districts’ FFA clubs, your local 4-H program, or the VFW Post #4307, PO Box 56, Enterprise, OR 97828. Donna Lee McDaniel Skovlin, 84, of Cove, passed away Aug. 14, 2015 in La Grande. For three years she had been treated for multiple myeloma. She was born on July 10, 1931 to Lawton Emerson and Florence (Coleman) McDaniel in Wallowa. Donna was raised in Wallowa and graduated from Wallowa High (1949) and Oregon State College (1953) where she was a Kappa Alpha Theta. While in college she met Jon Matthew Skovlin, of Enterprise, and they were married in Wallowa on June 22, 1952 and enjoyed 61 years together. Donna had a life marked by adventure. She and Jon started their journey together as wilderness guards and ¿ re lookouts in the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Wallowa Mountains. Together they had four children who they took to live in Kenya for three years and immersed herself in the culture. Donna was a great organizer; orchestrating travel to 55 countries where she developed a keen interest in cultures and natural history, and a special love of birds. Proud to be from Wallowa County, Donna enjoyed it often. Just 6 weeks before she passed away she hiked 9 miles with her family into the Minam. She loved camping, hiking, huckleberrying, mushrooming, and birding. She passed the love and concern for the natural world as her legacy to her children and grandchildren. She and Jon enjoyed researching and compiling regional history. They wrote four books about people, places and events that shaped local history. She also wrote multiple chronicles of her family’s history. A lover of life, people, and family her humble strength, courage, and compassion was the glue that held together so many people. She made many people feel loved and she connected to their world. Donna is survived by her son, Kirk and wife Laura, Enterprise; and daughters, Lisa Eriksen and husband Tom, Elko, Nev.; Meleah Ashford and husband Scott, Corvallis; and Kelly Skovlin and husband Don McAllister, La Grande. Patricia Ann Pullen-Jones died peacefully from multiple sclerosis on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015 in Portland, in her home, surrounded by her children. She was 71 years old. Patricia Lyman was born on Dec. 31, 1943 in Bozeman, Mont., to John Williamson Lyman and Katherine Ivannie Moore. She attended the St. Paul School for Girls in Walla Walla, Wash., and Wallowa High School in Wallowa, where she was accomplished in theater, music, Rainbow Girls, baton twirling and reporting for the school newspaper. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Maynard Pullen in 1962 and supported him through veterinary school as he pursued of¿ cer training in the army, moving across the country to Fort Collins, Colo., Fort Meade, Md., and later to Davis, Calif., and Glendale, Ariz. After 11 years, the marriage ended in divorce. Pat was married two more times, to John Clark, then to Randolph Jones, and lived in several places including Westlake Village, Calif., Gilbert, Ariz., and Rexburg, Idaho. Pat spent much of her life as a single mother, devoting herself to working and raising her children. She was a scholar and a secretary, an entrepreneur and a visionary, a self-taught graphic designer, a do-it-yourselfer, a romantic, a poet. She had the ability to make a home wherever she landed and the talent to do it well. She could replace the motherboard on a computer as easily as she could reupholster a chair or rewire an electrical circuit. Pat waged a life-long battle with MS. Though she was diagnosed at the age of 50, neurological testing showed her ¿ rst exacerbation occurred when she was just 15 years old. She learned to live with chronic pain and the disabling limitations that progressed with her disease, consistently prevailing over the challenges she faced and garnering the admiration of all who loved her. She will be missed greatly, but remembered dearly as a mother, sister and friend, full of life and attitude and passion. She is survived by her children, Lisa Pullen-Kent and husband, Steven, of Columbia, Mo., Stephen Pullen and wife, Peggy, of Suffolk, Va., Heidi Pullen-Rabbat of Portland, and Sarah Jones and partner, Seth Collins, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Melissa and Jeremy Buehner, Charles, Bronson, Isabella and Joseph Pullen, Sydney and Haley Kent, Gabriel Rabbat and Holden Collins; and great-grandchild Ashton Buehner; her sisters, Katherine Gwen Lyman of Keizer, and Dee Njuguna of Coos Bay, and her nephew Njuguna Gitau of Seattle, Wash., and nieces Randee McClung and Cierra Lowery, both of Tyler, Texas. A Celebration of Life was held on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, at the home of Pat’s daughter, Heidi, in Portland. In her death, she was mourned, in her victory over death, she was revered, and in our hearts she will remain.
