FFA member aids fight against breast cancer By Steve Tool Wallowa County Chieftain Too often, we hear the older generation complain about the lack of engagement or even social responsi- bility in the younger generation. They obviously haven’t met Tiara Huffman. Thanks to the efforts of Huffman, a recent Enterprise High School graduate, Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation now has an extra $2,145.56 to put toward follow-ups to suspicious mammograms. The follow- ups are done if the radiologist reading the mammo- gram sees a suspicious area, in which case the patient is referred back to hospital’s imaging department for a “diagnostic mammogram” and possible breast ultra- sound. From this point the patient is either cleared or referred for a biopsy of the area. Huffman, 18, said she came up with the idea during a 2014 FFA leadership conference in Washington, D.C. “We had to come up with a service project to better our community and come up with a passion. My pas- sion is breast cancer awareness because several people in my family who have had breast cancer. It’s dear to my heart,” Huffman said. The process of setting up the campaign had its diffi- culties, but Huffman said she received some help from the leadership conference to get started and was also provided a booklet with step-by-step help. She also credited her family and her FFA adviser, Stephanie Schofield, for their assistance in the project as well as the donors. “Really, a lot of it was me,” Huffman said with a laugh. She tried a number of ideas to meet her fundraising goal of $2,000. Huffman designed and sold men’s and women’s breast cancer awareness T-shirts, held a bake sale, placed donation buckets around town and even had a quilt raffle with a quilt donated by Gail Hillock. Proving her mettle as a multi-tasker, Huffman man- aged to meet her fundraising goal while working at Video Buffs, cheerleading and maintaining good grades. Not that everything was smooth sailing for Huff- man. She saw times of discouragement. “There were some events I did at the school where I sold miscella- neous breast cancer stuff, and it was discouraging when people didn’t buy it. I was really worried I wouldn’t meet my goal at one time, because it was in June,” she said. Now that the project is over, Huffman feels good about what she accomplished. “It was a long time in the making, but I feel like the money is put in a good place where it’ll be put to good use,” she said. Larry Davy, chief executive officer of Wallowa Memo- rial Hospital, who accepted the check on behalf of the Foundation, agreed with Huffman. “We very much ap- preciate the effort expended by Tiara to raise money for this critical service. A lot of people are going to benefit from her efforts. Her dedication to our commu- nity is amazing.” Huffman plans to attend Western Oregon University in Monmouth this coming fall. She will major in psy- chology with hopes of becoming a counselor.
