Thursday’s focus is fighting cancer
The popular Miles for Mammograms
Walk, part of the Tough Enough to Wear
Pink events during the 70th Annual Chief Joseph
Days, strides out at 9 a.m., Thursday, July 23.
The popular fundraiser saw 113 participants
last year and raised thousands of dollars for
Wallowa Memorial Hospital to provide free
mammograms for the uninsured. The folks
who wear their pink and walk pay $35 to enter
the walk and end the race, not only with the
sense of having done something worthwhile,
but with the wherewithal to enjoy the rodeo
even more: walkers receive a T-shirt,
admission to the 5:30 p.m. chocolate and
wine tasting gala in the Thunder Room, and
a Thursday night (7 p.m.) rodeo ticket
(value $14).
The Miles for Mammograms Walk route
begins at the rodeo grounds and proceeds
through Joseph and onto the Iwetemlaykin
Heritage Site (and back). Walks are two to
four miles (you can run it if you like).
You may register for the walk in
advance online at the Chief Joseph Days
website (www.chiefjosephdays.com)
or at the new office location by
Sports Corral in Joseph.
If time gets away from
you, don’t worry, you can
register at 8 a.m., on the
day of the race. You may
also pick up your traditional
pink at the office, which will carry T-shirts and
sweats for racers. If you’re a real cowboy or cowgirl you
can tap the savings account and bid on the custom-made-
for-you Tough Enough To Wear Pink chaps, made by local
saddle maker Ray Wilson. Those chaps usually bring in
around $2,000 in funds for the mammogram program.

Even horses are Tough Enough To Wear Pink in the
CJD Rodeo Parade.
This year, as last, Kayla Rynearson will
represent the hospital and the fundraising
events as the Pink Girl in Saturday’s parade.
Remember to wear pink to the rodeo on
Thursday to show your support of cancer
research, treatments, and the brave folks
who fight cancer.
