He received a BA in Business Administration from Oregon State University in 1962 and through ROTC was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Kurt was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Kurt earned a Jurisprudence Doctorate (JD) in 1966 from Willamette University College of Law. After his military service he worked for Governor McCall, served as deputy District Attorney and a municipal judge in Coos County. Kurt received a Bronze Star in June 1969 for “Meritorious Achievement in ground operations against hostile forces” while serving as a Captain in Vietnam. Also while serving in Vietnam, Kurt was deeply touched while volunteering at an orphanage. Kurt had many interests. Traveling for business and pleasure took him to Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and Vietnam. He was also an avid runner. Kurt is survived by his wife, Marjorie Black, two step- daughters, Lois Kaping and Margie Lee, two sons-in-law, Jerry Kaping and Clayton Lee, two sons, Eric Black and Scott Black, a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Black, and three grandsons, Jared Kaping, Nathan Kaping and Broedy Black. There will be a Celebration of Life on July 18, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the park at the head of Wallowa Lake. Friends and family of Kurt are invited to attend. U.S. Army veteran Keith F. Stein passed away peacefully of an extended illness at the age of 83 on March 12, 2015. Keith F. Stein was one of two sets of twins born in Joseph. He was a son to John Christian Stein and Alta Larma Fisher Stein, and had eight brothers and three sisters. After graduating in May 1951 from Enterprise High School, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Enterprise, serving for two years. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from Dec. 28, 1953, to Dec. 21, 1955. He received Basic Training at Ft. Lewis, Wash.; Advanced Training at Fort Ord, Calif.; trained as a wheel vehicle mechanic, and stationed at White Sands, N.M,, pulling rockets to the launch pad. After a break of seven years, Keith continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1962 and retiring in 1976, serving a total of 27 years in military service. His final assignment was Mess Cook for D Company, 321st Engineer Battalion, Twin Falls, Idaho. His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Components Achievement Medal (3), the Armed Services Forces medal (2), Army Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2) (Mess Cook and Mechanic) and Marksman Medal for the M-16 rifle. In the mid 1950s, he met the love of his life, Barbara J. Prough, of Filer, Idaho. Keith and Barbara married on July 15, 1956, in Filer, Idaho. Keith and Barbara had children — Melanie, Mark, Andrew, Edward, and Kyle. Keith was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to fish and hunt in Idaho. He loved to visit his parents, brothers, and sisters in Oregon each year. They shared many stories of brothers’ adventures and escapades at the family reunions. Keith worked for the Challenge Creamery in Jerome for 20 years and had the best ice cream recipe. He also worked at the Dandy Wood Waterbeds, Universal Frozen Foods, Weston Plaza, and the Red Lion Inn. He was known for always being to work on time, and in any kind of weather. He also worked as a custodian at the Idaho Power Office, First Baptist Church Preschool, and U.S. Bank. He also served his community as city dog catcher for the City of Jerome, and helped the Jerome Police Department when needed. Keith was also a Trustee at the First Baptist Church in Jerome, Idaho. Keith was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alta Stein, sisters Fern Wolfe, Ruby Pratt, Ruth Makin, Myron Stein, Harry Stein, and son Edward Stein. He is survived by wife Barbara Stein; their children, Melanie, Mark, Andrew, Edward, and Kyle; his twin brother Kenneth Stein, brothers John Stein Jr., Warner Stein, Don Stein, Dale Stein, and Gail Stein; eight grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday July 17, 2015, at the Enterprise Cemetery. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Enterprise Cemetery preservation fund (Enterprise Cemetery, 305 NE Alder St., Enterprise, Oregon 97828). Arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome. Robert “Bob” Vance Lewis, 84, of Wallowa, died July 4, 2015. A Celebration of Life was held Saturday, July 11, at the Wallowa Fire Hall. Bob was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to Edgar 9DQFH/HZLVDQG(I¿H6LOYHUV Lewis. When Bob was still a young child, he moved with his family to Wallowa, where he resided the rest of his life. He attended Wallowa Elementary and Wallowa High School, where he played both football and baseball and graduated in 1949. Bob married Esther Lucile Jeffords on Jan. 27, 1951, in Jerome, Idaho. Esther and Bob were married for 56 years. Bob later married Betty Shelton in 2009. Bob married his current wife, Lena Carper, in 2011. Bob worked for Bowman Hicks Lumber Company and later for Bates Lumber Company until they closed down in the early ’60s. Bob then worked for Dixon and Bennett Logging as a log truck driver. He then took a job with Boise Cascade in their truck shop as a mechanic and welder. He remained at Boise Cascade where he retired after 25 years. After being retired for a few years he went to work for Henderson Logging as a mechanic and truck driver where KHZRUNHGXQWLOKH¿QDOO\UHWLUHGLQ%REHQMR\HGKXQWLQJDQG ¿VKLQJULGLQJPRWRUF\FOHVDQGVQRZPRELOHVDQG59FDPSLQJ+H also enjoyed attending any and all yard sales that had tools for sale. Bob was a member of the Wallowa Volunteer Fire Department for 68 years. He joined at the age of 16 and remained involved with the department up to the time of his death. While with the Fire Department he served as both Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Chief. Bob was also a longtime member of the Wallowa Lions Club. Bob spent many hours working in the Lions food booth at various functions throughout the county. He also spent many hours mowing, watering and caring for the Lions Park in Wallowa. He was a 50-year member of the Enterprise Elks Lodge. Bob was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for a short time. Bob also served as Mayor and was a member of the City Council. He is survived by his wife, Lena Mae Lewis, Wallowa; daughter, Carmen Kay (Lewis) Wickam (husband Rod), Baker City; sons, Vearl Roy Lewis (wife Linda), Wallowa, and Bobb Lee Lewis (wife Kayleen), Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia; brothers, Weldon “Bud” Lewis (wife Lorene), Sherwood, and Bill Lewis (wife Arly), Vancouver, Wash.; sisters, Susan Lewis Campbell, Estacada, and Sally Lewis Jones, Kailua, Hawaii; 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. +HLVSUHGHFHDVHGE\KLVSDUHQWV(GJDUDQG(I¿H/HZLVZLIH Esther Lewis, and second wife Betty Lewis. Beulah Tally April 24, 1933 – June 27, 2015 Beulah LaRita Tally, 82 of La Grande, passed away on June 27, 2015, at Grande Ronde Hospital. A funeral service was held at Loveland Funeral Chapel, La Grande, on Saturday, July 11, followed by graveside services at the North Powder cemetery. Beulah was born April 24, 1933, in La Grande. Beulah was the eighth of nine children born to John and Erma (Scott) Gray. She spent her early years in Wallowa County at Flora and later at Minam. As a teenager, the family moved to North Powder where she graduated from high school. She and her high school sweetheart, Arlen Tally, were married on July 19, 1951. He preceded her in death in 1998. Beulah and Arlen lived in La Grande until 1962 when they moved with their four children to Cove. Beulah had a lifelong love of horses and owned many over the years. She was a 4-H horse club leader for many years as well. Beulah was an excellent seamstress and loved to paint and craft and was active in the art guild. When the children were older, she worked as a dental assistant and later as an office assistant. In 1998, she won a saddle and Las Vegas trip for getting the most donations for the diabetes trail ride. See OBITUARIES, Page A5 Dreema Lotze A Celebration of Life for Dreema Lotze will be held Friday, July 17, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Tamkaliks (powwow) grounds, 70956 Whiskey Creek Road, Wallowa. People are invited to gather to remember who Dreema was and the life she had. It’s a potluck gathering. Please bring a favorite dish to share with everyone. No alcohol. Plates, napkins and plastic utensils will be provided. Dreema Lotze died Nov. 18, 2013, at age 49.
