Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain Former organizer and current organizer go head-to-head in the final race of the 2015 Bowlby Bash Derby. Race founder and former organizer, photographer Ron Osterloh had to concede as Michael Berry of Wild Carrot Herbals takes the win in his carrot-mobile. Bowlby Bash a hit in 2015 By Kathleen Ellyn Wallowa County Chieftain Neither rain nor county-wide power outage put a dent in the fun at the 2015 Bowlby Bash in Enter- prise last Saturday. It’s too early for financial find- ings, but rumor has it that at least one vendor sold out of her wares and all vendors made sales. The Community Connection silent auction earned over $2,000 for the Meals on Wheels program, far exceeding any previous year’s take. As for family fun, there was no shortage of that with a goodly crowd enjoying the country fun and 10 cars racing in the Bowlby Bash Derby. Despite his trash-talk earlier this month, Enterprise Mayor Steve Lear didn’t make it past the first round, turning in a time of 32.93 against Nathan Curtis’ “Main Street Motors Flash” 30.58. Never mind, Lear’s 1900 Model T is still clearly fast enough to put the fear of God into any other mayor. No other mayor fielded a car against Lear’s “Public Works” model. Michael Berry of Wild Carrot Herbals did just as he said he would and showed all competitors his tail feathers ... er, carrot top. He went so fast with a first round time of 25.75 that he blew his carrot top right off, finishing the racing with just one of his three stylish carrot top leaves still attached. The 8-12 year-old division was hotly contended with Hartwell Brann fighting all the way to take the win in his OK Theatre car. Ken Wick, Chairman Wallowa County Planning Commission The Board of Directors of this Wallowa Education Service District will hold their regular meeting on Monday July 20th at 5:30 p.m. in the ESD Board Room. A copy of the agenda may be obtained at the Education Service District office at 107 SW First Street # 105 in Enterprise. Among adult racers, a dramatic tire blow-out took contender Jorge Aguilar, Jr.’s “Bandito” out just as he was headed up for his final match with the “Wild Carrot,” allowing former event organizer Ron Oster- loh and his “Flashback” car one last chance against newly elected event organizer Berry. It was a close one, but Berry and the “Wild Carrot” was unstop- pable on the day. David Carpenter of Enterprise outdid himself again with a whimsical construction of wheelchairs, a trike, a Conestoga-type wagon and Deadhead emblem steer skulls, taking the People’s Choice award. The “Steer Yer Face”-mobile required some maintenance to get up the hill and trundled down the hill with a safe time of 36 seconds, but nobody could top the style and attitude. Several of the drivers are taking their show on the road. Since Osterloh moved to La Grande he’s gotten that city excited enough about gravity races to stage its own Crazy Daze Derby Dash on July 18, so Main Street Motors is planning on sending the “MSN Flash,” Michael Berry has threatened to bring the “Wild Carrot,” and Steve Lear is taking his challenge to La Grande Mayor Steve Clements’ house. Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain Hartwell Brann, 11, right, shakes hands with Gavin Winn after taking the win in the 8-12 age group with his OK Theatre car. LEGAL NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain David Carpenter's "Steer Yer Face" covered wagon may not have been fast, but it still won the coveted People's Choice award. Carpenter's rig featured a double wheel- chair chassis for the covered wagon portion and a home- made trike for the driver's seat.
