His parents preceded him in death. Jack served in the US Navy at the end of WWII and was called back to duty for the Korean War where he served on the USS Kermit Roosevelt. Jack was self-employed and founded Coleman & Chrisman Insurance in 1956. He also prepared many income tax returns until his retirement in 1989. At that time Jack and Phyllis became “snow birds” and spent many winters in Yuma, Ariz. In 1989 Jack and Phyllis moved to Eugene to be closer to Jackie and her family. Jack was born April 27, 1925, the oldest of four children of Franklin J. Shine and Irene Gartzke Shine. He was born on the family’s homestead in the Promise area of Wallowa County. Frank ran a freight line between Elgin and Joseph, and later worked other jobs, including logging and working for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Irene had proved up her own homestead in the Grossman area, operated a bakery in Wallowa, and worked as a dressmaker. Although Frank and Irene worked hard to support the family, there was often no money. In 1937, the family lost the homestead for $67 in back taxes. The family moved into town and rented a home on the Ben Curtiss property on the Wallowa River. The children all attended the Lower Valley Grade School. Jack continued his schooling in Wallowa, and was active in the Boy Scouts and the Future Farmers of America. His primary activity, however, was working every minute he could, in order to help support the family. He graduated from Wallowa High School in 1943. Jack enjoyed attending many of his WHS alumni reunions over the years, including his 60th, in 2013. In 1943, the family left Wallowa and moved to a farm on Chehalem Mountain near Hillsboro. While helping build and operate the family farm, Jack worked in logging and worked at the Elmer Standish sawmill near Laurel. He was in demand among the local farmers as a hired hand, and for a time he operated a Jersey dairy farm. After several years of working on the family’s farm, Jack took ownership of a portion of the original property, which would be his happy home for the remainder of his life. He was drafted into the army in 1953 and was stationed in Virginia, then at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash., until his discharge in 1957. Jack married Lorraine Faye Payne on Dec. 16, 1953. Jack and Lorraine made their home on their Chehalem Mountain farm, and worked very hard to establish their farm and their family. They raised their three children here, and lived here for the remainder of both of their lives. Jack spent the majority of his working career, beginning in 1959, working as a surveyor for the Oregon State Highway department. He and his crew worked on many projects that are very familiar to locals: Highway 47 near Gaston/Forest Grove, WWII Veteran’s Highway (I-205), the Fremont Bridge, the Glenn Jackson Bridge and the Vista Ridge tunnel. Jack remained an active member of his community as long as he was able. He continued farming his land, helping with church and school projects, helping his kids with SURMHFWVDQGHYHQKHOSHGZLWKFOHDQXSDIWHUVHYHUHÀRRGLQJ in the area. Jack was a longtime member of the Laurelwood Seventh-day Adventist church. He was a man of faith and a gentle, loving example of how to be a man and a father. Jack is survived by Randall and Patricia Shine of Gaston, Valden and Deborah Shine of Hillsboro, and Jennifer and 'DQLHO(GG\RI+LOOVERUR¿YHJUDQGFKLOGUHQDQGVHYHQ great-grandchildren. His sister, Jean Shine of Hillsboro and his brother, Donn Shine of Hillsboro, also survive him. Our mother, Lorraine Payne Shine, passed away in September of 2004. Jack’s brother, Paul Shine also passed away in 2004. Cayle H. Krebs, 30, of Ione, died Saturday, June 20, 2015 as the result of a motor vehicle accident near Prineville.
