Joseph students help buy swing set
By Steve Tool
Wallowa County Chieftain
“When the going gets tough,
the tough get going,” so the say-
ing goes, and when Joseph grade
school needed a new swing set
during a period of tight fund-
ing, the teachers and classes did
something about it. Grades K-4
held fund raisers to help pay for
the $4,000 swing set. The hard
work by the classes paid off with
the installation of the swing set
on the playground in May. Total
funds raised were approximate-
ly $4,150.
The second grade led the
charge with $1,310 raised
through a read-a-thon. The re-
maining grades collectively
raised approximately $800.
Family Career and Commu-

instructor, Marla Dotson, spear-
headed the fundraising project.

$800, the high school donated
$500, and $600 came from pri-
vate donors. The rest came from
various other fundraising events.
The leftover funds will be
used to create a plaque or sign
that recognizes everyone who
donated or raised money.
Dotson also wanted to thank
Tim Kiesecker, the school’s
maintenance supervisor, for do-
nating the time and use of his
personal excavating equipment
for digging holes for the con-
crete anchors for the swing set.
Dotson also said the elementary
teaching staff who helped orga-
nize the fundraising efforts of
their respective classes deserve
thanks as well.
“The classes all worked
hard for this and they’re very
excited about their new swing
set,” Dotson said.

Joseph Charter School second graders occupy the playground’s new $4,000 swing set. The
second graders raised over $1,300 for the project.
