Ferguson Oct. 4, 1927 – May 31, 2015 Robert Steven “Steve” Ward passed away Dec. 8, 2014, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Steve was born Oct. 17, 1940, in Joseph, Ore., to (Robert) Lynn Ward and Gerville (Wilson) Ward. Steve was raised on Buford Ridge until he and his sister Dana (Ward) Gill became school age. Then they moved and lived on Elk Mountain Road. They went to Pratt School. Steve graduated in 1958 from Enterprise High School. Steve enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. He served on the USS Ranger during the Vietnam War. He lived in Tacoma, Wash. He bought a double-wide trailer, then he put it on the 2 acres of land on Elk Mountain Road that he owned. He then worked for Banes Electric for 31 years. Steve met and married Diana Clements. He helped raise Diana’s four children. When all the children were out on their own, they sold the place on Elk Mountain Road and moved to town. In retirement he enjoyed hunting before they would go to Arizona. Steve also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Steve leaves behind a wife, Diana Ward of Enterprise, his children, BJ Clements of Lewiston, Idaho, Michael Clements and wife Aimee of Clarkston, Wash., Richard Clements of Enterprise, Kathy Taylor of Taylorsville, Utah, a sister, Dana (Ward) Gill of Baker City, 15 grandchildren, several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his parents, (Robert) Lynn Ward and Gerville (Wilson) Ward, and brother-in-law, George Gill. A Celebration of Life will be held at the VFW Hall in Enterprise at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. David Gene Collins May 23, 1935 – May 24, 2015 David Collins passed away May 24, 2015, one day after his 80th birthday in Nampa, Idaho. Dave was born May 23, 1935 in Enterprise, Oregon to Lloyd F. Collins and Irene Collins (Arnold). Dave was preceded in death by his wife Toni, two older brothers and wives, Elmer R. Collins (Kathy), Harold L. Collins (Berwyn). He is survived by a daughter, Desta and a son, Darren. He is also survived by his sister Carol Ann Collins-Meyers of Walla Walla, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. D EATH N OTICES Clayton Sutphin William C. “Bill” Ferguson, 87, of Joseph, died May 31, 2015 at Marquis Shaw Mountain Hospice Care Facility in Boise, Idaho, after a short battle with cancer. A memorial service in celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 11 at Bollman Funeral Home, 315 West Main St., Enterprise. Bill was born to Isla and Bill Ferguson on Oct. 4, 1927 in Broken Bow, Neb. His siblings include Audrey Best, of Baker City, Jack Ferguson and Virginia Hayden (both deceased). Bill attended three high schools. He spent his junior year in Nebraska, then California and on to Enterprise where he graduated. Bill joined the U.S. Navy serving his country in the Pacific and Japan from 1945-1946. Bill married Connie McCubbin in Enterprise in 1949. Bill spent his entire career with the Oregon State Highway Department, starting in high school weighing trucks and retiring in 1982 as Resident Engineer in Pendleton. Bill’s job took him and his family to Enterprise, La Grande, Ontario, Hermiston and Pendleton. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman recording nearly 60 consecutive years of elk hunting in Wallowa County. He became an expert and nationally-ranked trap shooter. Bill and Connie enjoyed destinations including several fishing trips to Alaska and many winters in Arizona. Bill is survived by his wife, Connie, of Joseph, and children, Sue Fraser of Boise, Debbie Benz of Scappoose, and Jon Ferguson of Bend. Bill was blessed with two grandchildren, Jenny Doster of Boise, and Danny Fraser (deceased). Bill has three beautiful great-grandchildren in Boise, Kaitlyn, Carson and Madelyn. Several years into retirement, Bill and Connie came home to Wallow County in 1998 to enjoy their friends, beautiful country, hunting and fishing they both loved so much. On your next drive to the head of Wallowa Lake, look west towards the setting sun, squint and you might see the silhouette of an elderly gent, his cast lure reflecting the final rays of the sun. Smile and revel in his joy, he is doing what he loves. The family has designated Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation for memorial contributions. S ERVICE N OTICE Clayton Sutphin, 96, of Enterprise, died June 6, 2015, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. A full obituary will appear at a later date. BIRTH A son, Darrick Ronald Bennett, was born May 23, 2015, in Enterprise to Jeff and Amanda Bennett of Wallowa. Grandparents are Patricia McHatton and Janice Bennett. A daughter, Everly Mae Witherrite, was born May 24, 2015, in Enterprise to Lyle and Kimberly Witherrite of Imnaha. Grandparents are Sam Husted Hayward, Mike Hayward, Toss Anglin, and Doug Witherrite. Fran Sutherland passed away June 5 at Sequim Health & Rehabilitation in Sequim, Wash., after a short illness. She was 98 years old. Frances G. Kiehn Jones Miller Sutherland was born on a ranch outside Spokane, Wash., on Jan. 26, 1917 to John A. and Paulene Kiehn. She spent her youth riding horses with her two older sisters, and participated in jumping and riding in parades. She graduated from High School in John Day in 1935, and graduated from Western Beauty College in Portland one year later. She then worked as a beautician for two years before moving to Corvallis to attend Oregon State College. She met and married Dr. W.R. Jones, a veterinarian at the college. She had her son, R. Gregg Jones and then moved back to John Day after a divorce. She continued working as a beautician and also played piano in a 7-piece dance band that toured central Oregon. She met her second husband H. Donald Miller, a Forest Service Ranger, at one of the dances and married in 1945. For the next couple of decades they moved with the Forest Service all over the State of Oregon and to Atlanta, Ga., and eventually settled in Enterprise, Ore. Fran owned her own beauty shop there for many years, and they enjoyed many horse packing trips through the Wallowa Mountains during that time. Early in retirement, Don passed away from cancer in 1988 after 43 years of marriage. Two years later, Fran married Jim Sutherland and they spent 12 years pursuing interests in photography and traveling around the United States before he passed away from cancer in 2006. At age 90, she moved to Washington State to be closer to her son. In recent years, Fran enjoyed going out to lunch and taking scenic drives around the Olympic Peninsula with her son. She also pursued learning about naturopathic remedies and health, and was very proud of her age. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Elks club, and VFW Auxiliary. Fran always enjoyed meeting new friends, and she knew how to laugh. She is survived by her son, R. Gregg Jones of Forks, Wash.; two granddaughters, Karen Jones (Mrs. Dave Bennatt) of Wenatchee, Wash., and Vicki Edwards of Ashburn, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Bennatt of Wenatchee, Wash.
