Soroptimist scholarship awards total $15,000 Kathleen Ellyn/Chieftain Math Wizard Wade Isley of Enterprise shows off his certificate and badge after winning the Geometry division in the "Solve That Problem" event at East- ern Oregon University. Isley took home a $1,000 scholarship check, too. Problem-solving math students awarded Wallowa County mathe- maticians did well in the Eastern Oregon University “Solve That Problem” event earlier this month with two top contenders going on to State last weekend. Sarah Evarts of Enter- prise took the top award in the Algebra I test, snatching the $1,000 scholarship check in a tie-breaker with Timo- thy Steven of Cove. Wade Isley of Enterprise also won a tie-breaker, this one in Geometry, and took the $1,000 check from Grace Knutsen of La Grande. Wallowa County stu- dents swept the Pre-Alge- bra category with Renee Seal of Joseph, Anna Moholt of Wallowa and TJ Grolte of Joseph placing first through third. In other events, Jacob Evarts took a third in Alge- bra II and Raymond Seal of Joseph took a third in Open 1 (Pre-Calculus). In team events, where points are earned for the overall team winners, Small School competitor Renee Seal of Joseph took a second in the Pre-Algebra, Rylee Goller of Wallowa took a first in Algebra, Ashley Starner of Wallowa took a first in Algebra II, Sierra Cabral of Wallowa took a second in Geometry, Macey Frei of Wallowa tied for a first in the Open Small School division. Enterprise competes as a Large School because they send two teams so that more students have a chance to compete. In the Large School division Cole Far- well earned a first in Alge- bra, Jacob Evarts took a first in Algebra II, Ermanno Laici of Enterprise took a third in Algebra II, and Wade Isley of Enterprise took a first in Geometry. Enterprise Team Red took third in competition for the Relay Trophy. Wallowa was the Overall Team winner in the Small School Division. Isley and Jacob Evarts went on to the University of Oregon State Level compe- tition but neither was able to crack the top three. Eight graduating seniors in Wallowa County are recipi- ents of scholarships totaling $15,000 from Soroptimist International of Wallowa County. Soroptimist awarded seven college scholarships of $2,000 each, and one Pro-Tech schol- arship of $1,000. With the end of the school year drawing near, Joseph Charter School handed out academic achievement awards and Honor Society membership to 28 students. The school also increased its Honor Society by 15. New members of the National Honor Society include: Aaron Borgerding, Johnelle Suto, Ally Cooney, Morgan For- ney, Cayden DeLury, Isabelle Tingelstad, Taylor Grote, Kai Oliver, Haven Johnson and Addie Kilgore. They will receive Enterprise High School diplomas through the alternative school. A ceremo- ny is planned on May 29 at 4:30 p.m. in Enterprise City Park.
