A9 WEDNESDAY April 29, 2015 Cubs drop 2 to Pirates In good TASTE By Rich Rautenstrauch Wallowa County Chieftain Wallowa County’s three- school softball team, the Cubs, lost a pair of one-run games Friday, April 24, to the Riverside/Arlington Pi- rates, 13-12 and 10-9. The Cubbies are now 5-3 in league play. “Both of them were good ball games. We just came out on the short end of it. They had better hits at the right time,” Cubs coach Cliff Conrad said. Both games went the full seven innings. In the fi rst game the Cubs went ahead late, scoring fi ve runs in the top of the sixth. Arlington an- swered with four in the bot- tom of the sixth, however. Last Saturday was opening day for the Wallowa Valley Little League Association and close to 140 kids partici- pated in 13 games. The games, spread out over the day, were played at Jensen Fields and the Wallowa Valley Little League Field. There are two Little League ma- jor teams in Wallowa County this year, the Vipers and the Mudhens. The Vipers team is made up of 11- and 12-year-olds from Enterprise and Joseph. The Mudhens are a mix of Wallowa and Enterprise players with minor leaguers moving up the ranks to fi ll the roster. Hayden Hite waits for the right pitch in a game against the Mt. So prepare your palette. We’ve col- lected some facts about the spring tur- key hunt, selected some tips on fi lling your turkey tag, and presented them along with good recipe for your bird. That’s the main course. But many would argue that the accent food to follow is even more exciting — morel mushrooms. So keep reading for your tips on both hunting and preparing mo- rels as well. Let’s start with the turkey. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) reports that turkey wintered well and numbers are expect- ed to be higher than the last few years ... and that should mean some pretty darn good hunting since almost half (47 per- cent) of 4,229 turkeys harvested during the spring 2014 season were harvested east of the Cascade Mountains. See TABLE, Page A16 By Rich Rautenstrauch Wallowa County Chieftain UMATILLA — The Wallowa boys golf team continued to improve on the season after traveling to Umatilla. The Cougars team-wise shot a round of 401 giving them a fifth or sixth place finish out of eight teams. Stats for all the tourney’s participating teams were not available.
