A9 WEDNESDAY February 25, 2015 WHS, down 14, rallies to win Cougar girls will play in state tournament By Rocky Wilson Wallowa County Chieftain Behind by 14 points in the third quarter, the Wal- lowa girls’ basketball team Courtesy photo/Charity Ketscher Lady Outlaw Reagan Bedard drives the baseline for Enterprise against Imbler. Outlaw girls bow out, 35-33 (8-4 league and 14-10 over- all) rallied to win a do-or-die showdown with the Nixy- aawii Eagles Saturday to claim third place at the 1A-7 Old Oregon League District Basketball Tournament in Baker City and advance to OSAA 1A State Tournament action tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. PDT in Adrian. Trailing 38-36 with about 24 seconds to play, Wallowa sophomore Lauren Makin clunked a three-point at- tempt off the rim, the Ea- gles rebounded, and within seconds the Cougars made a desperation foul to send a Nixyaawii player to the line. Apparently, WHS picked the right player to foul as she promptly missed both free throw opportunities and WHS was back in business. See COUGARS, Page A10 STATE BOUND By Rich Rautenstrauch Wallowa County Chieftain Enterprise girls lost a tight contest against the Imbler Panthers Friday night, Feb. 20, 33-35, in district play in Eastern Oregon University’s Quinn Coliseum. The Out- law girls battled back from a SRLQW GH¿FLW HDUO\ LQ WKH game and lost it in overtime when Imbler put up a shot with no time left and made it. Although Roath won the match by a 5-3 decision, both wrestlers advanced to this coming weekend’s 2A/1A OSAA State Wrestling Championships. Fuller, Wilcox survive 2A/1A District Wrestling By Rocky Wilson Wallowa County Chieftain Tournament cancellations have derailed on-the-mat preparation time for about 13 junior high school wrestlers in Wallowa County, forcing an extended practice time of one day more than a month between the last major tour- nament held in Halfway on Feb. 6 and the Regional Wres- tling Tournament for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade wrestlers to be held March 7 in Boardman, says Enterprise junior high school coach Carl Sanders. See MATS, Page A10 Eagles keep post-season hopes alive By Rich Rautenstrauch Wallowa County Chieftain The Joseph boys’ basket- ball team overcame some early season adversity and that long resurgence has yet to end. The Eagles placed second in this year’s district tournament. See JOSEPH, Page A10 By Rocky Wilson TEAM SCORES: Wallowa County Chieftain Faced with the prospect of con- cluding their season one week shy of everyone’s goal of competing at the state 2A/1A Wrestling Tour- nament this coming weekend, Feb. 27-28 in Portland, one senior each from Wallowa and Joseph rose to WKH RFFDVLRQ DQG SODFHG HLWKHU ¿UVW or second at the District Tournament held in Enterprise last Saturday. Qualifying to compete at state were WHS’s 195-pounder Micah Fuller who never needed the third round to advance to state and JoHi Eagle Jared Wilcox who, wrestling at 152 pounds, decisioned Imbler’s Tyler Tandy 6-3 in a wrestle-back to claim second place and that ticket to state. On the season, Fuller’s overall record now stands at 30-3 and Wil- cox’s at 23-8. Competition was stiff at the 13- team district meet where, unlike teams from Joseph, Enterprise, and Wallowa, several schools were rep- resented with mat men in nearly ev- HU\ZHLJKWFODVVL¿FDWLRQ While team champion Burns (184.5 points) had wrestlers in 13 of the 14 weight classes, Joseph was represented by six wrestlers, Enter- SULVHE\¿YHDQG:DOORZDE\WZR As a team, Joseph placed seventh Burns 184.5; Crane 149.5; Union/Cove 136.5; Elgin 112.5; Pine Eagle 90.5; Grant Union 85; Joseph 74; Heppner 68; Adrian 60; Irrigon 56; Imbler 51; Enter- prise 38; Wallowa 33.5. In this match, at 145 pounds, Seal recorded a third round pin over Bryson Shira, of Adrian. with 74 points, Enterprise 12th with 38, and Wallowa 13th with 33.5. Joseph received team points from all six of its wrestlers. Wilcox tallied 22 team points by receiving a bye and winning three out of four matches. His one loss came by a narrow 5-3 decision to 152-pound champion Austin Roath, of Crane. Claiming third places for Joseph were Lars Skovlin, at 132 pounds, and Rylie Warnock, at 195 pounds. Coming from the losers bracket, Skovlin lost in a 12-3 major decision to Evan Gunderson, of Burns, for second place, and Warnock notched two pins and was pinned twice en URXWHWRKLVWKLUGSODFH¿QLVK Raymond Seal, at 145 pounds, and Benjamin Lopez, at 182 pounds, both earned fourth place ¿QLVKHVIRU-RVHSKZKLOHWHDPPDWH Cole Kiesecker, also at 182 pounds, earned a sixth place. Enterprise’s team, coached by Troy Farwell, is noteworthy because of its youth. Although no Outlaw advanced to next weekend’s state meet, their collective showing at district last weekend bodes well for future years.
