A2 Obituaries wallowa.com February 4, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain O BITUARIES Mary Jean Wilson Aug. 7, 1922 – Jan. 25, 2015 Sally Carlson Sept. 30, 1943 – Jan. 10, 2015 Mary Ingle Hearing June 16, 1924 – Jan. 23, 2015 Mary Jean Wilson, 92, died in Albany on Jan. 25, 2015. Mary Jean was born in McMinnville on Aug. 7, 1922, to Otto L. Mortensen and Lulu E. (Van Fossen) Mortensen. Her father was killed in a hunting accident when she was 13 months old, and she and her mother remained in McMinnville. Mary Jean graduated from McMinnville High School in 1940. She worked for West Coast Electric Power in Portland, Mutual Life Insurance in McMinnville, and the Yamhill County Agent. In 1944 she married Floyd B. Wilson, Jr. and they had two daughters. She was an accomplished homemaker most of her life, except for two years employed at Salem Credit Bureau. She and Floyd made Keizer their home for 55 years. Survivors include daughters Shirley (Richard) Starr of Albany, Karen (Mark) Mason of Joseph, grandchildren Scott (Shaay) Gallagher-Starr, Colin (Sarah) Starr, Darin (fiancé Denia Kirk) Starr, Jerry Booze, Jeena Winn, and Kelly Winn, great-granddaughters Eliana, Ayla, Ananda, and Mikaela, brothers-in-law, Don Wilson of Wallowa, DeWayne Wilson of Hubbard, and sister-in-law Mary Alice Zastoupil of Leaburg. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years. At her request, there will be no services. Burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery with her husband. Sally Carlson, 71, of Wallowa, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, after a battle with lung cancer. There will be a memorial for Sally sometime this spring. Details will follow. Sally was born in Enterprise Sept. 30, 1943, to Robert and Mildred McAnulty. Sally attended elementary school and two years of high school in Spring¿ eld. The McAnulty family moved to Prineville in 1959 where Sally attended Crook County High School, graduating in 1961. Sally attended the University of Oregon for a year before moving to Roseburg to Moin her ³9ernon´ family and work in the assessor¶s of¿ ce. She and her close friend Elaine Bails moved to Los Angeles in 1966 where she worked for an insurance company. Sally and Elaine moved to Seattle in 1968 where Sally worked at the U of W. ,n 1969 Sally moved back to Spring¿ eld where she worked for the Department of Human Resources and met her husband-to-be Ken Carlson. Ken and Sally were married Dec. 24, 1973. After completing his education at Oregon State University, Ken and Sally moved to Los Angeles where Sally attended Long Beach State University, majoring in Social Work. Sally graduated with honors and was the top student in the college of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 1980 Ken and Sally moved to Seattle, where Sally earned her Masters in Social Work at the University of Washington. Sally loved school. But instead of becoming a professional student she became a professional social worker working for a number of mental health organizations before forming her own business offering employee assistance programs to companies. After Ken retired, Ken and Sally moved to Wallowa in 2003 to care for Sally’s mother. Sally volunteered at the Nez Perce Homeland Project. Sally was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010 and moved to WildÀ ower Lodge’s memory care unit in 2012. While in Seattle, Sally spent summer vacations working on a cook crew for high mountain camps in the Canadian Rockies. Christmas was a special time. Sally loved to host and would celebrate the holiday with many parties. She made her home a Christmas fairyland with unique decorations. Sally’s second love was reading. She had read every book in the Spring¿ eld Public Library before she entered junior high. In her heyday she could read a book a day. When Sally tired of social work she got a job at a bookstore. It was her ideal job. Sally is survived by her husband Ken of 41 years, her brother Mike McAnulty of Spring¿ eld, and one sister and ¿ ve brothers of the Vernon family into which Sally was adopted. Sally’s survivors are grateful to the staff at WildÀ ower Lodge in La Grande, who treated Sally with love and the utmost respect during her last years. Mary Marjorie Ingle was born in Portland on June 16, 1924, on her mother’s 32nd birthday. She was the second daughter of Drs. Joseph and Margaret Ingle. Mary graduated from La Grande High School in 1942 and furthered her education by earning a degree in music from the University of Oregon and a degree in education from Eastern Oregon College. While at U of O, she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and was active in musical groups throughout her academic years. Mary taught elementary school in Spring¿ eld, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., prior to marrying Ross E. Hearing on Aug. 15, 1948. Mary and Ross made their home in La Grande after Ross completed his law degree. Mary was an active homemaker in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, raising two daughters. She returned to teaching in the mid-1970s at Greenwood Elementary school, retiring in 1985. Mary traveled extensively domestically and internationally in retirement, taking trips with friends, her daughters and her granddaughter. Various European destinations included Great Britain and Italy. She also explored Russia, China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Mexico, the Panama Canal, Antarctica, Australia, Israel, and Egypt, yet Wallowa Lake was Mary’s favorite place. She spent each summer at her cabin at The Lake. Mary loved Asian art and decorated both her home in La Grande and her cabin at Wallowa Lake with treasures she collected during her travels. She loved to play bridge and was active in the First Presbyterian Church and PEO Chapter DK. She enjoyed learning to ski at Anthony Lakes. She was a longtime member of Knife and Fork. Mary played golf during her homemaking years and maintained a social membership at the La Grande Country Club in retirement. Mary’s health declined after she broke her hip in December of 2013. Always an avid reader, and with her eyesight diminishing, Mary enjoyed listening to audiobooks, completing Sue Grafton’s entire series of Kinsey Millhone books from “A” through “W.” She loved dancing, ragtime, and blues music, and was especially fond of listening to local musician Brady Goss. Mary passed away on Jan. 23, 2015, in Portland. She was preceded in death by her sister, Stella Jean Ingle Hecht. She is survived by her two daughters — Elizabeth Oliver and spouse Brian of Joseph, and Sylvia Hearing and spouse Ted Lawshe of Portland — and her granddaughter Megan Oliver of Bend. +DUU\6KHQH¿HOG Nov. 17, 1933 – Jan. 26, 2015 Harry A. Shenefield, former Joseph City Marshal went to be with his Lord Jan. 26, 2015 at Walla Walla General Hospital, Walla Walla, Wash. Son of Melvin and Virginia Shenefield, he was born Nov. 17, 1933 in Compton, Calif. He is survived by wife Beverly and children, Kevin and Dawnella; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Predeceased by parents, three children and three grandchildren; one sister and two brothers. He completed his law enforcement career at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. Memorial service will be held Feb. 21, 2 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church in Walla Walla with Rev. Kevin Congrove officiating. This summer his ashes will be interred at Prairie Creek cemetery. Date and time for this gathering of family and friends will be announced later.
