A2 Obituaries/News wallowa.com January 28, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain O BITUARIES James Henderson Nov. 25, 1950 – Jan. 1, 2015 Julie Ann vanBelle July 21, 1963 - Jan. 18, 2015 Glenn “Cy” Allen May 27, 1915 – Jan. 8, 2015 James Leonard Henderson, age 64, born Nov. 25, 1950, died Jan. 1, 2015. Leonard died at home in Otis after battling mesothelioma for some 15 years or so. Leonard was born in Enterprise to James L. (Jim) Henderson and Maravene (Mary) Henderson-Pickle. He was raised in Wallowa and the Promise area where the family had cattle. He went to school in Wallowa and graduated in 1969. He spent his early years custom haying, building wood frame shops, Behlen metal buildings, and mechanicing. Later on Leonard developed the Promise ranch to grow alfalfa and grain. He took on his biggest project to build an irrigation dam that still exists. Leonard went to Alaska in 1985 to “Save the ranch” as he said it. He spent six years there. Four years working for Silver Bay Logging as head mechanic/welder and two years as manager of the Yakutat Lodge. He moved the family back to Oregon in 1991 and took on a job as mechanic/welder with Siletz Bay Logging and other logging companies for a couple of years. He then worked as mechanic/welder for ranches in Washington landing at Mattawa, Wash., where he worked at a feedlot. He moved on to work at an alfalfa cubing plant in Othello, Wash. During this time he became too sick to work and moved back to Wallowa County in 1994. He started his company Henderson Friendly Computers and in 2001 moved to the Oregon Coast. The oxygen-rich coastal air was easier for him to breathe. He is survived by his wife M. Joanna Henderson of Otis, and 10 kids ranging in age from 37 to 18. Daughter Leslie Henderson-Hulse of Wallowa, son Lyle Henderson of La Grande, daughter Meagan Henderson of Chesapeake, Va., daughter Bethany of Moscow, Idaho, daughter Emelle of Portland, sons Steel and Craig of Otis and three stepsons Dwyane, Phillip, and Nathan. He is also survived by his sister Annelia Riggs of Vancouver, Wash., and ex-wife Gayle Lyman of Wallowa. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents James L. (Jim) Henderson and Maravene M. (Mary) Shumway-Pickle. A celebration of Life will be held in Lincoln City on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. at Vineyard Church. Julie Ann vanBelle, aged 51, died surrounded by her family on Jan. 18, 2015. Julie was born July 21, 1963 in Medford, the daughter of Patty Pangburn and the late Warren Gossman. Julie and her sister Gina grew up in the Central Point area where her love and passion for horses was instilled at an early age. Julie married Glen vanBelle 34 years ago at the Liberty Grange in Joseph and they made their home in Wallowa County. Glen and Julie had two sons, Joe and Jimmy, and Julie devoted her life to her family. Julie spent countless hours passing her adoration for horses down not only to her own sons, but to countless Wallowa County youth. An admirable nine years were spent co-founding and running the Blue Ridge Riders 4-H horse group. Julie also served as President of the Northwest Quarter Horse Association in Walla Walla, Wash. Free weekends were often spent traveling to shows with her beloved horse Red. Together they brought home many ribbons, trophies, and High Point Awards. When Julie wasn’t horseback, she could be found spending time with her family. Whenever possible she would travel to Joe or Jimmy’s to spend time with their families. Julie’s grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Whenever they spent time together, Julie always had activities planned and the memories they made will be treasured forever. Julie is survived by her husband, Glen; mother, Patty Pangburn; sister, Gina Gossman; son, Joe (wife Lindsey); son, Jimmy (wife Alexa); and grandchildren, Claira and Carter. A service in Julie’s honor will be held in Enterprise on -XQHDWWKH&ORYHUOHDI+DOO,QOLHXRIÀRZHUVWKHIDPLO\ suggests memorial contributions be made to the Wallowa County Horse 4-H program. Longtime Wallowa County Resident, Glenn Allen, died peacefully in his sleep Jan. 8, 2015, close to the home of his son, John Allen, in Myrtle Creek. Called “Cy” by everyone who knew him, he was born on the home ranch near Lostine, May 27, 1915. He lived there until 1964. He, his wife, Dora, and their twins Greg and Grace then moved to Milton-Freewater. One of the last real cowboys of the time he rode and trained horses all his life, was still riding at age 95. He won many trophies for trail riding, team penning and carried the American Flag in several Pendleton Round-Up parades. In 1946 he and Dora started a horse riding club for kids called “The Liberty Buckaroos.” They taught many kids to ride and care for their horses. The club remained for almost 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, the former Dora Mae Hetrick in 2012, children, Grace 1986, Greg 2012 and stepson James in 1979. He is survived by son, John and his wife, Myrna, their children, Darwin and Debbie. Daughter, Glenda, her children Teresa and James. Grandchildren, Becky, James, Jess, Randy, Chris and Donna. Several great-grandchildren and one special little great-great- grandson Kashton Allen, age 3, who spent time and talked to Cy every day until the end. Michael Todd Rearick July 10, 1965 – Jan. 2, 2015 Mike passed away peacefully at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, Wash., on Jan. 2, 2015 at the age of 49. He was born in Van Nuys, Calif., to Kenneth & Beverly Rearick on July 10, 1965. He graduated from Lennox High School, Lennox, S.D. in 1982 and attended S.D. State University in Brookings, S.D. for a time. Phyllis Dotson May 28, 1929 – Jan. 11, 2015 Phyllis Lorraine Dotson passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Phyllis was born May 28, 1929, in North Bend to Glenn and Elizabeth Lindros McKay. She graduated from Junction City High School in 1947. She married Russell Dotson Sept 15, 1948, in Eugene. They lived around the Northwest working in the logging industry until 1957 when they settled in Athena. She worked as a bank teller and for Farm Chemicals in accounting. In 1965, they moved to Joseph and were partners in Fred’s Market in Enterprise. Later they were partners in the 76 Union Gas Station in Joseph. After Russell bought two logging trucks, Phyllis kept his books until retirement. Phyllis was an artist and loved drawing, painting, photography and knitting. She enjoyed a lively game of cards and spent many afternoons playing with her close friends. Phyllis loved the ladies bible study and attended faithfully for many years. She was a member of the Imnaha Christian Fellowship. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her JUDQGFKLOGUHQ¿VKLQJGRLQJDUWSURMHFWVDQGSOD\LQJRXWGRRUV She is survived by two sons and their wives, Dale and Marla Dotson of Joseph and Dan and Laura Dotson of Imnaha, grandchildren Chad Dotson of Joseph and Samantha Dotson of Eugene and Cody Lee and his wife Chelsi of Lewiston, sister- in-law Susie McKay and niece Roxanne McKay of La Pine, and sister-in-law Peggy Dotson of Bend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, her parents, and brother, Jim McKay. A celebration of life was held at the Imnaha Christian Fellowship, Saturday, Jan. 24.
