A2 wallowa.com News/Obituaries January 21, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain O BITUARIES Ron Walter June 11, 1950 – Jan 15, 2015 Anna Rose Makin (Nelson) November 15, 1923 - January 11, 2015 Ray Gaulke Aug. 2, 1922 – Jan. 7, 2015 Ron Walter died peacefully at home in Wallowa County Oregon, surrounded by his family, January 15, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gail, and their daughter, Danielle Boven of Auckland, New Zealand. His death saddens many LQIDUÀXQJFRPPXQLWLHVIRU Ron, Gail, and Danielle were modern nomads. They lived for extended periods of time and established close friendships in Stirling City, California; Girdwood, Alaska; and Joseph, Oregon. Danielle’s move to New Zealand extended the Walter family far into the southern ocean where Danielle and her family - husband Rick, sons Jules and Anton, and daughter Natalia - live. He was born on June 11, 1950. in Hollywood, Calif. A graduate of Chico State University, Ron and family moved to Girdwood, Alaska where he extended his studies and trained as a surveyor. In addition, Ron spent several winters driving snowcats at Alyeska Resort. He and Gail then moved to Joseph, Oregon, where they HVWDEOLVKHG:DOORZD$VVRFLDWHVDODQGVXUYH\LQJ¿UPLQ Wallowa County. Ron fostered a practice of excellence, based on application of the latest technologies. He infused this excellence into the staff that he mentored, and always exhibited the strong moral values and professional ethics that were his essence. His active mind, quick wit, and energy kept all those about him smiling and pushing the job forward. As a result, the services of Wallowa Associates were highly sought after throughout the Western U.S and will continue, to honor Ron’s legacy. Ron and Gail enjoyed their life on the Divide, east of Joseph, Oregon in the home they built together. They were also regular visitors to New Zealand, and to communities of friends and family throughout the west. Anna passed away at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, Wash., at the age of 91. She was the second of three children of Adrian and Naomi Nelson. She was raised in La Grande where she graduated high school and met her husband Orville Makin. The two were married on April 26, 1942 and lived and ranched in the Wallowa Valley until they retired in 1992. Anna worked with her husband on the ranch and also as a nurse at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. After retiring, Anna and Orville moved to Vale so they could be near their daughter, Linda, husband David and family. Anna and Orville returned to Wallowa County in December of 2011 and settled in Joseph. Anna enjoyed gardening, working on her family’s genealogy, reading, spending time with her family and was a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Anna is survived by her husband Orville, sons Gayle and wife Sue of Sherwood, Kirk and wife Elizabeth of Enterprise, sister Jessie Olson, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Anna was preceded in death by her mother and father, daughter Linda Makin Hyde and sister Luella Jordan. She was very loved and will be dearly missed. Sergius Ray Gaulke, 92, whose roots go back over 100 years in Wallowa County, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at the OHSU hospital in Portland. He was a longtime Hood River resident and dentist. He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Walla Walla, Wash., to Sergius Carroll Gaulke and Rita (Hambleton) Gaulke who both grew up in Joseph and graduated from Joseph High School in 1918. Ray’s early years were spent in Baker City and Coquille while following his father’s career with Standard Oil. He graduated from Coquille High School in 1940, along with his wife to be, Jeanne Claterbos, whom he married in 1944 and spent the next 58 years with before Jeanne’s passing in 2002. Ray shared the last ten years of his life with his loving companion Dorothy Mellenthin. Ray attended the University of Oregon for two years EHIRUHHQWHULQJ1RUWK3DFL¿F'HQWDO&ROOHJHQRZ2+68 School of Dentistry) and graduating in 1945. Following JUDGXDWLRQKHVHUYHGDVDFRPPLVVLRQHGRI¿FHULQWKH U.S. Navy Dental Corps stationed in Farragut, Idaho, and Bremerton, Wash., until the end of World War II. He then moved to Hood River in 1946 and entered into dental practice as an associate of Dr. Carey H. Jenkins. Shortly afterward he began solo practice for 35 years until his son, J. Scott Gaulke, joined him in 1982. During the Korean War, he had to put his private practice on hold for two years when he was recalled by the Navy, and then loaned to the Army who were short of dentists. He retired from the practice of dentistry in 1986. Ray and Jeanne raised four sons who were the primary focus of their interest and activities that included boating, skiing, hunting, camping, hiking, travel, and photography. As a father and grandfather devoted to his family’s love of sports, he attended hundreds of ball games and sporting events over the years, enthusiastically supporting his children, grandchildren, and their teams. From 1962 to 1974, Ray served as a Hood River Port Commissioner and was a strong supporter of the development of the Hood River waterfront that occurred during his tenure. For over 50 years he enjoyed summers with his family at their cabin at Wallowa Lake. Ray is best remembered by his friends IRUKLVVHOÀHVVGHYRWLRQWRKLVIDPLO\KLVWDOHQWIRUFUHDWLYH problem solving, and his compassion and empathy for his patients. Ray is survived by his sons and their families: Michael R. and Judith A. Mellenthin Gaulke of Atherton, Calif.; Thomas G. and Sherry A. Gaulke of Albany; Dr. J. Scott and Sue Gaulke of Hood River; and Terry K. and Cheryl Hughes Gaulke of Tualatin. Also surviving are grandchildren Brent, Kelly, Lindsey, Lauren, Cameron, and Mitchell Gaulke; and great-grandchildren Gunnar and Logan Gaulke. Donald Chestnut May 10, 1927 — Jan. 13, 2015 Donald A. Chestnut, of Corona Calif., passed away peacefully on Jan.13, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Roxy Holle Chesnut. Don and Roxy lived in Joseph from 2001 to 2009. While here Don volunteered at the Joseph museum, adopted a planter in the City of Joseph, volunteered and attended St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Enterprise, sang with both the local community chorus and the La Grande college chorus, and was a member of the MidValley Theatre Group. Don loved the outdoors, riding his bike and early morning walks through Joseph. Don touched the hearts of many and will be sorely missed.
