A9 WEDNESDAY January 7, 2015 Wallowa boys win one of three at LG tourney Tallest player out with an injury WALLOWA – In spite of subpar shooting that, in the end, narrowly missed a sec- ond win, the Wallowa Cougar boys’ basketball team won one of three contests Dec. 29- 31 at the La Grande Optimist Basketball Tournament held at Eastern Oregon University. Wallowa, now 1-1 in league and 5-6 overall, missed 19 lay-ins during a one-point 49-48 loss to Powder Val- ley (5-6) on Monday, Dec. 29, said WHS Coach Greg Oveson. The Cougars re- deemed themselves somewhat the following day by nudg- ing 2A Cove (4-7) by a 49- 46 score, then fell 49-33 on Wednesday, New Year’s Eve day to a talented team from Monument/Dayville (7-4). Senior Gareth Murray led Wallowa scorers with 13 points against Powder Valley. The team’s other senior, Karl Wellens, tallied 15 points to lead the scoring parade the following evening in the win against Cove, while no Cou- JDUSOD\HUVZHUHLQGRXEOH¿J- ures in the loss against Monu- ment/Dayville. WHS played all three games without the services of its tallest player, 6’3” fresh- man Caevan Murray, who was sidelined with a sore back. EHS launched its league campaign last Friday and Sat- urday nights, falling 61-51 to Elgin in Elgin Friday night and 43-30 at home against Imbler Saturday. In the game against the Elgin Huskies (1-1 and 5-9), Enter- prise senior Kaden Lathrop and Husky senior Jake Burgess put on shooting exhibitions those in attendance might long remem- ber. EHS seniors Carsen Sajonia and Emma Hall came up big and provided the inspiration for the weekend sweep. EHS went on their own 12-2 run in the second, going into the locker room up 18-12.
