Steve Sharp poses with his idol John Wayne – circa 1959, according to Sharp. Courtesy photo.
‘The Duke’ still riding to the rescue
By S.F. Tool
Wallowa County Chieftain
More than 35 years after his 1979 death, John Wayne still does his
part to keep frontier communities safe from evildoers. In an example of
cross-agency cooperation, Wallowa County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve
Sharp donated a John Wayne print to the Enterprise Police Department
to help fund a new K-9 unit for the police force.
Sharp, a longtime fan of Wayne, says he actually met and even had
his picture taken with “the Duke” in the 1950s, shortly before Sharp en-
tered the Marine Corps. “I was maybe 15 or 16 when I met him
(Wayne). John Wayne had a ranch in Casa Grande, Arizona, and my
dad had the largest catering business in the state and he catered all of
John Wayne’s parties there,” Sharp said.
“John Wayne was a very nice man. He posed for pictures with me as
well as my mother and aunt. He was very personable. I was wearing a
‘Hoss’ hat (Hoss was a character on the television show “Bonanza”)
who was very big back then, and John Wayne still towered over me.”
The print Sharp is donating is of a pencil sketch and features a latter-
years Wayne dressed in cowboy garb and wearing a dark, high-crowned
hat. Sharp obtained the print while he owned a gift shop in Virginia
City, Nev., where he also worked as a sheriff’s deputy. “A guy came
through wanting to sell the picture, and I bought it because I’m a big
John Wayne fan,” Sharp said.
“I wanted to give the picture to the dog program because I know (En-
terprise Police Chief) Wes Kilgore is a big John Wayne fan, and let’s
face it, I’m 72 years old and I need to downsize,” Sharp said with a
laugh.
Sharp paid $450 for the print back in the 1980s. “I don’t know what
it’s worth now. I tried having it appraised, but the closest I can get to
knowing anything about the artist is that he was probably a friend to
Wayne,” Sharp said.
Sharp said although he did not have a personal interest in the K-9 de-
partment he wanted to help ensure the continuance of the program. “I
haven’t hung the thing on the wall since I moved here, and I figured it’s
time to let someone have it and raffle it off to do some good,” Sharp
said.
Unsure of the current financial state of the K-9 program, Sharp said
that even if the EPD had enough money to buy a dog, he knew of other
expenses the program would incur. “I think this print will go a long
way toward buying food, and after my wife and I talked about it, we
decided that donating it was the right thing to do,” Sharp said.
Enterprise Police Chief Wes Kilgore said the department appreciated
the contribution. “Steve just came in one day with the print and said, ‘I
hear you guys need to raise funds for the dog program, maybe this can
help.’ I’m sure raffling off this print will go a long way toward that
end,” Kilgore said.
