2 The Bend Bulletin, Friday, December 7, 1962 Long season opens Hoop sport 'takes over' The ol round ball takes over the prep sport spotlight tonight and it won t stop bouncing unai late in March. Four Central Oregon teams get their initial taste of action in the Central Oregon cage tournament at Prineville tonight. Defending champion Bend meets Redmond in the 7:30 open er, while favored Prineville tack les a scrappy Madras club in the second game. The four teams move to Bend Saturday night with tonight's los ers battling for third place in tne 7:30 opener and Friday's winners clashing for the championship tro phy in the game to follow. Coach Chuck Hudson of Bend named a tentative starting lineup today which includes 6-2 Gary Mc- Kilmer's pro future in doubt SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-The football future of San Francisco Forty Nlner Billy Kilmer was in doubt today as the versatile half back recuperated at St. Mary's hospital. Kilmer underwent a four-hour operation early Thursday to re duce and re-set a compound frac ture of the right ankle and re pair lacerations of the chin and over the right eye. Ha received the injuries Wednesday night when his car left Bayshore High way near Belmont and wound up Overturned in a ditch. Dr. Lloyd Milburn, Forty Nlner team doctor, would not discuss Kilmer's future. Ho said "Bill's general condition Is good, but we must watch the healing process before we comment on next sea son." Even the suggestion that It was too early to tell was disturbing for the team. Kilmer, who flopped as a quarterback, has become a star at halfback. He ran, passed and caught passes and his hard playing and sliding style of run ning made him a favorite with Forty Nlner fans. The Forty Niners, who face tough Green Bay Sunday at Ke- lar Stadium, Thursday activated Lloyd Winston, a member of the taxi squad. The 230-pound back played his college ball at VSC. Bobby Gaiters and Jim Vollen welder were working out at Kil mer's tight back spot in drills Thursday. Gaiters has the speed and Vol lenwelder is a hard runner and is especially valued for his abil ity to block for the passer. But neither of them has yet shown the all-around brilliance displayed by Kilmer this season. I... . ; i wiiii' i" jsa2 Now Thru Sundayl ispdt n The personal story behind a sex survey... FRANK'S Specialized Service 1423 S. 3rd EV 2-3884 Special to The Bulletin PENDLETON Fans at Pen dleton, used to having high school athletic teams in state tourna ment and playoff action, are get ting hungry. They want a basketball winner. Once a frequent competitor in state A-l hoop tourney action, the Bucks haven't made the trip to Eugene since March 1939. They were favored to win in the 1959-60 season, first for the new Intermountain Conference. But, after being in contention in the early going, tlie Bucks tailed off badly with an 8-8 league mark and an 11-9 over-all record. It was good enough for third place but not good enough for one of the two IC berths in the state meet. Then came the 1960-61 with Pen dleton finishing far back in the league pack with a 5-9 record. Again Top Pick Last year Pendleton was again picked for top league spot in pre season balloting. But once again the Bucks tailed off badly, finish ing with a 6-8 league mark and a 10-12 over-all record. Still, in a ballot of IC coaches conducted by a Portland newspa per this week, the coaches, the guys who should know, again pick Pendleton to win tlie Intermoun tain Conference pennant. There are several reasons, not the least of which is 6-2 all-purpose athlete Steve Bunker, a two year senior letterman forward. For the "must" big man, Pen dleton has a good one In 6-5 sen ior Larry French. Larry, an in-and-out performer last year, is bound to have more confidence as he starts this season. He appears to have tlie tools to become an excellent center. Big Transfer Added And there's more height with tlie transfer of 6-3 forward Moe Ashcroft from McEwen High of class B Athena. Lettermen guards, both juniors, are 5-11 Dick Jones and 5-5 Jack Baird. Both are stars In football and baseball. Others on the varsity squad are Tom Erickson, 6-2, center; Kelly Andrews and Ron White, both 5-10 forwards; and guards Bill Mc Crae, 5-8 Robbie Cook, 5-7 and Steve Corey, 5-8. Back to lead Pendleton is vet eran cage mentor Dale Warberg, who fashioned some excellent state tournament clubs prior to the slump that began with the 1959-60 season. A firm believer In tough man-for-man defense, Warberg of late has had to rely on the zone with players who possess less defen sive savvy. Last year, for example, Pendle ton had one of the highest-scoring centers in the state in 6-5 Ray Hughes. Yet Hughes and his mates had lots of trouble in keep ing even the weaker teams in the conference from outscoring the Bucks. Coach Has Operation While Warberg has been recup erating from a back operation, new assistant coach Ron Ricketts, who replaces Chet Schiewe, has been handling Pendleton drills along with track coach Grant Schiewe. "There probably will be a few more who will play varsity ball," says Warberg, who returned to his regular classes at PHS this week. "Some will possibly play jay vce ball in preliminary games and then suit up for varsity con tests. Several are showing good promise." Preliminary schedule Is not available, but here's Pendleton's league schedule: Jan. 4, Mac Hi home; Jan. II, at Bend; Jan. 12, at Redmond; Jan. 18, Prineville home; Jan. 19, Madras home; Jan. 25, La Grande home; Jan. 26, Baker home; Feb. 1, at Hermiston; Feb. 2, at Tlie Dalles; Feb. 8, at Mac Hi; Feb. 16, Redmond home; Feb. 16, Bend home; Feb. 22, at Ma dras; Feb. 23, at Prineville; March 1, at Baker; March 2, at La Grande; March 8, The Dalles home; March 9, Hermiston home. Griffith seeks fight honors LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UPI) Emile Griffith of New York, two time welterweight champion, makes his bid for "fightcr-of-the. year" honors here Saturday night in a title defense against slugger Jorge Fernandez of Argentina. Champion Emile and challeng. er Jorge have finished their train ing and await the nationally tel evised 15-round fight. Neither is evpprted to have any difficulty making tlie 147-pound weight lim it. Griffith is favored at 12-5 be cause of his speed, punch and two former victories on decisions in non-title bouts over Fernandez in 1960. Promoters Mcl Greb and Jack Doyle expect a crowd of about 6,000 and a gate of $60,000. Linfield rolls to easy victory OI.YMPIA. Wash. (UPI) Lin field's Wildcats rolled up a 101-64 nonconference basketball victory over St. Martin's here Thursday night.
