girl born last night at St. Charles
Memorial Hospital. The baby
weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces, and
has not yet been named.

Miss Kay Asseln, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Asseln, 1404
Newport Avenue, is home for the
summer from Salem, where she
attended the Merritt-Davis School
of Commerce the past year. Miss
Asseln was named "girl of the
month" by the Nancy Taylor
Charm School, a part of the
course, for the last month of
school. She is a 1961 Bend High
School graduate.
Golden Age Club will hold a
public card party Friday evening
at 7 o'clock at the clubhouse on
E. Fifth and Glenwood Drive.

government will operate in Cana
da's 25th Parllment and avert an
other election in six months.
A post-mortem on how the con
servatives' 203-seat majority in
the House of Commons was re
duced in Monday's election to a
118-seat minority also was a cer
tainty. Lester B. Pearson, leader of a
resurgent liberal party which will
hold at least 99 seals when Par
liament convenes in September,
also scheduled a major strategy
session Wednesday.
Diefenbaker returned to the
capital Tuesday night from his
homa riding (district) of Prince
Albert, Sask. Questioned by news
men when his plane made a re
fueling stop in Winnipeg, Man.,
the prime minister declared:
"The government has no coali
tion at the present time and it is
still In office."
Most observers felt the best
chance of avoiding another elec
tion within six months appeared
to lie with some form of coali
tion between the conservatives
and the Social Credit party SOC

R. E. Jewell, Bend city school
superintendent, was to return to
day from a business trip for the
district. He was In Salem Tuesday
to attend educators' meetings,
and went from there to Portland
to meet a sales representative
who accompanied him to Seattle
to look at buses.
Junipairs will 'jold a square
dance Saturday night at the Rim
Rock Riders' hall, in the Glen
Vista community, starting at 8:30.
All square dancers are welcome.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert F. Tale-
bere of New Haven, Conn., are in
Bend this week visiting Mrs. Tala
bere's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Glenn Ratcliff. Mr. Talabere, who
was in Bend two summer's ago
as assistant pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church, was grad
uated last week from the Yale
Divinity School. The couple will
return home next week, where
Mrs. Talabere is enrolled In the
Grace New Haven School of Nursing.

Millard Eakin
takes bank post
Millard R. Eakin, Madras, has
been appointed area agricultural
field representative for the First
National Bank of Oregon, it was
announced by M. F. ihelton, man
ager of the Bend branch.
Eakin will take over the duties
of Vernon Atwood, Prineville, who
will be transferred to Nyssa as a
loan officer. Atwood has been with
First National for two years.
Working out of Madras, Eakin
will serve Deschutes, Crook, Jef
ferson and Wheeler counties.
For the past six years Eakin
has been manager of the Eastern
Oregon Mills grain elevator at
Madras. From 1949 to .1956 he
uperated a diversified irrigated
farm near Powell Butte where he
raised cash crops and livestock.
He also operated a large dryland
wheat farm and cattle operation
In Grass Valley from 1932 to 1949.
Eakin Is a member of the Mad
ras City Council, the Redmond
Rotary Club and the Jefferson
County Seed Growers Association.
He Is past president of the Ore
gon Wheat League of which he is
also a life member. Hu is past
president of the Redmond Rotary
Club.
He is on the budget committee
of the Central Oregon College,
Bend, and has served on the Mad
ras Planning Commission.

Jehovah's Witnesses of Bend
will travel to Longvlew, Wash.,
this summer to attend one of the
largest Christian conventions in
tile Northwest area, according to
Don Underwood, minister of Uie
local church.
The group will meet with some
100 Oregon and Washington con
gregations at the Courageous Min
isters District Assembly, sched
uled for August 3-5. The session is
designed to equip individual min
isters with improved teaching

Forestry students wind up
guard school at Suttle Lake
Trainees that Include forestry
students from colleges throughout
the United States emlel their
guard school work at Suttle Lake
today and headed for assignments
on the five districts of the Des
chutes National Forest.
On Wednesday night, a "com
mencement" program was held at
the guard camp, following a din
ner attended by nearly 100 per
sons at the Methodist Y o u t h
Camp, and competitive events
that included a log bucking, pump
er and volleyball contests.
A highlight of tlio evening was
the presentation by Supervisor A.
A. Poust of the Deschutes Nation
al Forest of citations and pins, in
recognition of outstanding safety
work and for long servico.

Brogan, associato editor of The
Bend Bulletin and chairman of the
Oregon Board of Geographic
Names. He touched on the back
ground story of points of interest
in the Deschutes forest, with

Don Polcrs, who was in charge
of the three-day guard camp, and
William D. Shenk assisted in the
presentation of awards. Rangers
Henry Tonseth, Kenneth Evans,
Morvin Wolf, Leslie Yates and
Ray Bennett introduced staff per
sonnel. Amos S. Kamara, forester from
Liberia who has bison taking ad
vanced work at Oregon State Uni
versity, spoke to the group and
answered questions.

was elected national president of
the Izaak Walton League of Amer
ica.
He succeeds Alden J. Erskine of
Sioux City, Iowa.
Binford, 62, Is an attorney, for
mer newspaperman and past
chairman of Uie Oregon Water
Resources Board. His eiecUon
came at the league's 40th annual
convention here.

The prostrate woman opened
