The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA)
had considered the delay after an
Atlas-F missile similar to the
one used in man-in-orbit flights
blew up just after liftoff April 9.
If an astronaut had been
aboard the rocket, there is a
chance he would have perished,
sources said.
But Uiey added that NASA had
decided the current safety mech
anism was adequate, giving a go
ahead for a step-up in Uie tempo
of flight preparations.
Last week Carpenter's space
capsule was put on top of its AU
las 107D booster at Pad 14,
launching point for astronaut
John Glenn's history-m a k i n g
flight Feb. 20.
Carpenter and his backup pilot,
Navy Comdr. Walter Schirra and
the Project Mercury launch team
ran through a full-scale practice

District court
fines assessed
Ernest Murphy, Portland, was
fined $300 and $5 costs and given
a 60-day sentence in the county
jail, when he appeared in district
court Friday on a charge of driv
ing while under the influence of
intoxicating liquor. Judge Joe
Thalhofer sentenced him to an
other two days in jail for driving
while his operator's license was
suspended.
Ten-dollar fines were paid yes
terday by Richard Wayne Patter
son and Harry James Fagen,
boUi of Bend, for disobeying stop
signs.
James Benton Dexter, Bend, ap
peared in court Friday on a
charge of angling by prohibited
method. He was given a suspend
ed $25 fine and charged $5 costs.
Actor facing
narcotics count
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (UPI)
Billy Gray, 24, Uie young actor
who portrayed "Bud" on Uie
"Father Knows Best" television
series, faces trial June 18 on a
charge of possesing narcotics. '
A motion to dismiss Uie charge
against Gray was denied Friday
in Superior Court. He was allowed
to remain free on bail.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Gray
March 25 in West Hollywood. Ho
was accused of having a plastic
bag containing marijuana under
the seat of his car. The actor de
nied smoking marijuana, but ad
mitted having a "few beers."
