TIMBER, TIMBER
and MORE TIMBER
Twenty years ago, allowable cut on the Des
chutes National Forest was 81,000,000 board
feet annually. Today it is 136,000,000 board
feet. This illustrates the progress in timber
cutting in Deschutes County. It also illustrates
the progress made through reforestation, use
of the complete log, and through selectivs
cutting. In addition to federal timber, most
timber companies own millions of board feet
of their own. There is enough timber in Des
chutes County to support existing mills for
another 50 years. Reforestation will continue
production after that. The timber picture her
Is bright. The towering ponderosa pine is the
hub of our economy. The huge supply of thii
timber will enable Deschutes County to pro
vide jobs for thousands of men practically
forever.
