for Ted Kennedy
BOSTON (UP1) Atty. Gen.
Edward J. McCormack Jr. an
nounced Monday he Is a candi
date for the Democratic nomina
tion for U.S. senator, signalling
a head-on clash with the Kennedy
family.
"It is vital lo the common
wealth that its next senator be a
man who has had wide and inten
sive experience with the Drohlems
of the state and lis people," Mc
Cormack told a news conference.
It was an obvious attack on the
political inexperience of Edward
M. (Ted) Kennedy, the President's
youngest brother, who has never
run for political office.
"He must also bo a man whose
education, training and accom
plishment in public service give
assurance that he will bring a
mature and experienced judgment
to problems of national and inter
national affairs," McCormack
said.
McCormack, 38. a nephew of
House Speaker John W. McCor
mack, D-Mass., is expected to
face Edward Kennedy, who has
just turned 30 in the Democratic
convention next June. Kennedy
was expected to announce his can
didacy later this month.
, The Senate seat at stake this
year is the one vacated by then
Sen. John F. Kennedy in 1960 af
ter his election as president. Two
years remain of Kennedy's term.
