Colordao River
agreements set
WASHINGTON UPP - Secre
tary of Interior Stewart L. Udall
Tuesday announced agreements
with private utilities for their par
ticipation in the backbone power
transmission system of the Colo
rado River Storage Project.
The Bureau of Reclamation es
timates the cost of the federal
system at $151,500,000.
Udall said the agreements will
mean a reduction of $27 million
in the cost of the system as orig
inally planned for all-federal con
struction in Colorado, Utah, Ari
zona, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
This $2,' million will be the cost
of lines the government will not
build. The private power utilities
will set up their own transmis
sion systems for wheeling and in
terconnections in certain areas to
meet government requirements.
Udall in a news conference an
nouncement said the plan achieves
administration goals of:
Maximum savings for the Up
per Colorado Storage Basin fund,
which will be made up of power
funds to be used to pay off par
ticipating projects and to finance
major dams and reclamation proj
ects in the basin.
Full protection of the service
rights of preference customers at
the lowest possible rates.
Strengthening of the federal
system through interconnections
with facilities of private power
companies.
