But in the Intermountain Con ference, the issue is fairly well settled with Baker boasting a 10-1 record and only three more lea gue games to play all at home. Hermiston is in second place with an 8-3 mark, while Pendleton is two games further back with a 6-5 record. Baker last made the A-1 derby in 1959, Hermiston in 1960. Here, more or less, is how the other districts shape up: DISTRICT 1 (PIL) - Cleveland f 13-2 1 ahead by two games. Grant in second place, with Franklin and Jefferson still contenders. DISTRICT 2 IWilco) - Molalla (8-21 has scant half-game margin over Sandy. Scappoose also in running. DISTRICT 3 (Metro) Milwau kie (12-1) still setting fast pace, with second-place fight including Astoria and Beaverton. DISTRICT 4 TYV) - McMinn ville (U-2) challenged by Forest Grove, one game back. Newberg still in running with 9-3 record. DISTRICT 5 (Midwest) Rose burg (8-2) tops tight race, with North Eugene, South Eugene and Marshfield pressing. DISTORT 6 (Southern) Klamath Falls (10-11 appears to be in. Big fight between Grants Pass (7-5i and Mcdford (6-51. DISTRICT 8 South Salem (10-0) still leading, with Corvallis (8-2) only team within shooting range of first place with five games left on district schedule. Two area collegiate basketball stars, Stan Williams (ex-Sisters) and Brad Flanary (ex-Bend High), are secuig considerable ac tion this year. Williams, playing for Ted Wil son's late-blooming Linfield team, has appeared in 22 games. Used mostly as a floor leader, senior guard Williams has taken only 33 shots, made 15 of them for a .455 percentage second best on the team. He has four for seven free throws, 71 rebounds (sixth best on team), 22 personal fouls, 34 total points and a 1.6 average. Flanary, a junior guard, has scored 168 points for Southern Oregon College in 20 games for an 8.4 average fourth best on the SOC squad. Flanary is sixth in rebounds with 49, fifth in field goal per centage with .378 ( 62 of 1641 and fifth in free - throw percentage with a .638 mark (44 of 69). Playing at home is a terrific advantage, especially in the In termountain Conference. Pendle ton East Oregonian sports editor Nolan Skiff earlier pointed out this year that, of 36 games played, home teams had won 25 games and visitors oiUy 11. Now, with 44 league games on the books this season, home squads have won 30, visitors only 14 a better than 2-1 margin. Skiff quotes George DeLap, wily Hermiston coach: "If you win a few games on the road, you're bound to be in the thick of the race because any good team is sure to win most of its home contests." In an earlier column. Skiff noted that Mark Cotton has been named to succeed Jim Ward as Hermiston High football coach next fall. Cotton has been head track coach and assistant in foot ball and basketball the last five years at Hermiston. But Skiff adds this warning: "In all fairness to Cotton, it should be noted that he will face the same thing Ward did Irvine; to finish in tiie first division in a conference in which most of the teams come from schools with more population to draw from, and with bigqer student bodies. "Ward served very well over a period of years, giving Hermiston perhaps Die most consistently strong elevens the school has had in recent history." Ward plans to remain in IJie Hermiston school syslem, with his future assignment to be announc ed later. The Bulldogs have an eight game 1962 football schedule plan ned including Wy'east, Moses Lake, Redmond (kings x), Baker (league), Madras (kings x) and wind up with three league games La Grande.
