American Gov, ered by a scratchy, stiff and cold production blanket Saturday night. In the one-hour "Golden Show case special on CBS-TV, the cen tral marital relationship emerged with all the warmth of an Army cot. Seldom have I seen one of executive producer David Suss- kind's adaptations miss its target by so wide a mark. Adapters Audrey Gellen and Jacqueline Babbin turned Jan de Hartog's glowing study of the com plexities of wedded bliss into a confused, confusing crazyquilL. Do mestic crises, treated as a series of debates, failed to register with clarity or develop realistically. The comedy pace ran off with the subtleties and crushed into the floorboards whatever poignant uni versalities the play intended to honor. Jackie Cooper and Tammy Grimes were unable to shape the characters of Michael and Agnes into full-bodied, believable people. II isn't entirely the fault of the script and Ronald Winston's di rection, either. Cooper's imitation of ' the head of the household was right out of the amateur dra matic troupe's version of "Life With Father." The acting talents of Miss Grimes needed more than a plain stick drawing to shake at: As the narrator, Tom EweU con tributed the proper facial expres sion to the proceedings. He looked deeply pained by it all. A more successful adaptation of a less worthy piece of material was that which "The Farmer's Daughter" received Sunday night on NBC-TV s "Theater 62. This color special told the fairy tale about the idealistic farmers daughter whose well-developed po litical and romantic instincts en abled her to nail an election and the well-born bachelor hero, all during the same pre-election poli tical rally. I have this feeling that he was still very much an emergent force. Kovacs, I guess, goes down as TVs Nathaniel West.
